  Frederick Spear, father of Sam, was a resident in Lone Pine area more than 60 years ago, at which time he ranched on the old Hamilton Ranch in Lone Pine; engaged in mining at Keeler; worked at the N.S.P. company for a time; also the old marble works northeast of Keeler; and for a number of years was employed by the City of Los Angeles. He was born 1854 in England but spent most of his lifetime in the Owens Valley where he and his wife located with thier three children. His wife was Emma Jane Salter. His daughter, Kate, now Mrs. J.W. Gilmore of Santa Monica; Mercy, now Mrs. Ori Johnson of Bonanza, Oregon; and Sam, former Sheriff of Inyo County who passed away several years ago. Another son, Fred, was born here and with his wife now resides in Bishop. Mr. Spear was one of the oldest living Masons in the state and in May 1949, many valley residents journied to the southland to attend a celebration in the Palms Masonic Temple honouring his 71 years a mason. He was a member of Inyo Lodge 221 in which he continued his membership even after leaving the valley 20 years ago. He was also active in the Knights of Pythias while living here. For the past 20 years, he has made his home with his daughter, Kate Gilmore of Santa Monica; and last spring visited old friends in Lone Pine while attending the rodeo. He is survived by two daughters: Mrs. J.W. Gilmore of Santa Monica; and Mrs. Ori Johnson of Bonanza, Oregon; and a son, Fred Spear of Bishop
