Andrews, Official, Dies William Hayden Andrews, 67, deputy city controller and for 23 years a public official in McKeesport and Allegheny County, died suddenly yesterday at his home, 1828 Coursin St. Death came at 6:50 p.m. Mr. Andrews had returned home early from his duties at City Hall, and was reported not feeling well, but he showed no signs of critical illness until late afternoon, the family said. A blood clot was believed to have caused the death, they said. Friends will be received after 7 p.m. today at the Richard L. Fait Funeral Home, Jenny Lind Ave. and Soles St. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Eighth Ave., after a brief service at 2:30 p.m. in the funeral home, and the burial will be in Versailles Cemetery. The Rev. Leroy Hall will officiate. Born in McKeesport on Oct. 22, 1880, son of the late William H. and Caroline Edmundson Andrews, Mr. Andrews was a lifelong resident of the city. He attended local schools and began to work with the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. as a rate clerk in McKeesport, a post he held for 20 years. After serving for ten years as a juvenile officer for Allegheny County, he was employed here as assistant city assessor on Jan. 16, 1935. When Controller John Montgomery and Asst. Controller L. Ray Johnson entered the service in World War II, Mr. Andrews became acting controller, then was appointed controller by Council June 17, 1945 to fill the unexpired term. Seeking the Republican nomination in September 1945, Mr. Andrews was defeated by Warren S. Knight, who later was elected to the controller's post. Council appointed Mr. Andrews deputy controller in 1946. He was a memeber of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Junior Order of Mechanics Lodge 109, and Daughters of America Chapter No. 50. Surviving are his wife, Leah Holding Andrews, a daughter, Mrs. Edward K. Spear of 1416 Bouquet Ave., seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. (copy from Belinda Holland)
