Note: Article 369: Blairs and Stantons "McMinn County, Tennessee andIts People 1819 - 1997, Walsworth Publishing, 1997, page 121Submitted by: Jim Jarvis, 10427 Palmer Avenue, Melrose Park,Illonois 60164-1845 My McMinn County ancestors were the Blairsand the Stantons. According to the 1850 Census, Lewis andElizabeth (Smith) Stanton were born in Virginia and NorthCarolina respectively. He was born about 1772 and she about1780. One of their children was a daughter, Lucinda Stanton, who was born about 1808, probably in North Carolina or SouthCarolina. By 1828, she was married to William P. Blair andliving in Blount County, Tennessee along with her parents andother children still at home. Her husband William was bornabout 1805. By the 1840 Census, Lucinda, William Blair andchildren were in McMinn County, Tennessee. They may have beenattracted by the Ocoee Land District land sale that began in1838. One of two "William Blairs" bought a 40-acre parcel about5 miles apart near Charleston, Tennessee and the Hiwassee River. The purchase was for $.25 per acre the 14th or 18th of August,1841. The earliest sales for the best land was for $2.00 anacre, and later sales of the least desirable land went for aslittle as $.01 per acre. Sometime in 1846, William anddaughter, Jane, on one horse, left for the State of Iowa. Janewas the only one of the children who could ride a horse. Beforethey went too far, the horse ate something poisonous and died. They walked back and got another horse and made it all the wayto Louisa County, Iowa on the second attempt. By the 1850Census, the entire William Blair family was living in LouisaCounty, Iowa. The saddest story of this family is that ofBarton Blair. When he was 21 years old, he married 17 year oldCatherine Potter on August 15, 1862 in Louisa County, Iowa andthe very next day he was in the Union Army on a troup train ofIowa soldiers heading South, never to see his young wife again.Within six months he lay dying of an infection from a bulletwound in his hip incurred during a skirmish near Fayetteville,Arkansas.
