Note: Abraham, aka Abram, moved to Ulster County about 1845 at about age 15. At age 19 he married widow Maria (Wolven) Hoyt and built a large family homestead off Ostrander Road in Willow, Town of Woodstock, Ulster County, New York. Abram was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Willow until 1853 when he and 23 others withdrew from said church in a much publicized dispute and organized the First Wesleyan Methodist Church of Woodstock. Meetings were held in the neighborhood in a small school house until a church was built the following year and still stands at the intersection of Ostrander Road and Route 212 in Willow. Abram was one of the first trustees of the church and held this position until shortly before his death. He died age 69 of stomach cancer and was buried in Wesleyan Methodist Church cemetery, Willow, Ulster County, New York. Newspaper Articles: "Desperate Encounter With A Bear---One night last week, while Mr. Abram Quick and his son [Egbert] about 19 years of age, living near Lake Hill in Woodstock, Ulster county were out coon hunting, their dog suddenly began barking and yelping, and the son, who in his eagerness had left his father behind, on coming up to them, perceived in the top of a large tree what he thought was a coon, and leveled and fired, killing the animal, which proved to be a cub. Before the young man had recovered from his surprise, the crackling of underbrush and growlings of some large animal were heard, and in a moment afterwards a huge bear, which proved to be the mother of the cub he had shot, appeared under the tree and sprang forward to grapple with the destroyer of her young. Young Quick, however, was too quick for her, and eluding her embrace, brought down the butt of his gun on her head with great force, knocking the stock in pieces, and staggering the bear. Recovering herself, she again sprang forward and a desperate struggle ensued. Quick was armed with nothing but his broken gun, and the dogs having run upon the first appearance of the brute, he was forced to depend upon his own abilities. By his agility, he succeeded in eluding the grasp of the enraged animal and by repeated blows of his gun barrel, finally forced her to succumb, but not until her skull was smashed into smithereens and his gun barrel resembled a Bershire pigs tail. Mr. Quick hastened to the relief of his son and succeeding in capturing one of the cubs, the other two escaping. The bear weighed over four hundred pounds."---The Daily Courier, Syracuse, New York, issue 07 Jan 1869. "Lake Hill -- Abraham Quick died in this place on Saturday night, with cancer of the stomach. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his loss. He was a good neighbor and liked by all who knew him. His funeral was held at the Wesleyan church on Monday."---The Kingston Argus, Kingston, Ulster County, New York, issue 20 Sep 1899. "Lake Hill -- The funeral of Abraham Quick was largely attended on Monday week. Rev. J. L. Eighmey preached the funeral sermon, with remarks from Rev. Wm. H. Reynolds, of Bearsville, who gave some touching words of an acquaintance fifty years ago with Mr. Quick. Rev. J. G. Watters also spoke some time on the acquaintance and dealings he had with deceased and always found him to be a man honest and upright in all his dealings."---The Kingston Argus, Kingston, Ulster County, New York, issue 27 Sep 1899.
