"Woodstock, Sept. 21 -- Alfred Lane of Willow met with a serious accident on Saturday. He was driving from his home to Bearsville, and while opposite Joseph Gridley's in Shady, something frightened his horse, who shied, throwing Mr. Lane out. He struck on his head. Neighbors ran to his assistance and found him badly injured. The doctor was summoned, who found that he had sustained a severe injury to his spinal cord, he being paralyzed from his neck down. The doctor said two things might have happened, either a hemorrhage in spinal canal, thus pressing on the cord, arresting its function, or else one of the vertebra might have been fractured and a fragment pressing on the cord. If it was a hemorrhage it will probably clear up in a few days, but if a fracture an operation would be necessary to remove the fragment."---The Kingston Daily Freeman, Kingston, Ulster County, New York, issue Wednesday Evening, 22 Sep 1915.
