Note: Alfred was a farmer, lumberman and proprietor of a sawmill on the Beaverkill Creek, the latter mentioned in Sylvester's History of Ulster County as being "below the junction of the two branches" of the Little Beaverkill and the Beaverkill. He lived in an area called DeVall Hollow, between Willow and the Town of Shandaken border. An 1875 map of the area shows Alfred and his brother Uriah living next to each other and they appear in sequence in many census records. Alfred died age 73 of "dementia terminal and exhaustion", buried by Knapp & Merritt funeral home, Middletown, burial place unknown. According to the medical records department of the Middletown Psychiatric Center, the first burial on the hospital grounds was in 1914, so it is safely assumed that Alfred is not buried there. Newspaper Articles: "Lake Hill -- Alfred Lane, of this place, was taken to the asylum at Middletown one day last week, and his wife has closed the house and says she cannot live alone."---The Kingston Argus, Kingston, Ulster County, New York, issue Wednesday, 07 Sep 1892.
