Notes
a. Note:   Richard immigrated to the United States 08 May 1876 aboard the ship Wyoming, port of departure Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland, port of arrival New York. Richard appears on ship's list as age 8, travelling steerage with his father James, age 45, and brother George, age 10. According to his death record, Richard was a resident of the United States for 20 years, which confirms his date of immigration of 1876. Richard was naturalized 05 June 1885 at Common Pleas Court, New York County, at which time he was residing with his father at 252 West 41st Street, New York City, occupation clerk. Richard was a resident of Boston, occupation laborer, at the time of his marriage in 1885. In May 1886, Richard was a resident of Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire for the birth of son George and was employed as a Captain in the Salvation Army. In about June 1891, Richard was in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts for the birth of son Harold. By Sep 1891, Richard was in Manhattan, as evidenced by little Harold's death record which indicates he was a resident of Manhattan for eight months prior to his death. Richard died age 33 of phthisis pulmonales, an old term for pulmonary tuberculosis. He was buried in St. Michaels Cemetery, East Elmhurst, Queens County, New York, Grave 97, Row 24, Plot 1, no stone or marker. Of note here is that Richard's death record gives his occupation as "laborer". The Salvation Army, who keeps meticulous records of all it's officers, has no record of Richard's service. They did, however, provide a record of another Richard Byron who was still living after 1897.
  Newspaper Articles:
"While in a fit of despondency this morning, Richard Byron, a laborer, twenty-four years old, tried to kill himself by shooting himself in the left breast at No. 426 East Seventy-third Street. A policeman, who was in the house at the time, arrested Byron".---The Evening Post, New York, New York, issue Wednesday, 05 Dec 1888, p.5.
"Richard Byron, who has been living with his wife and two children at 426 East Seventy-third street, attempted suicide yesterday morning by shooting himself in the left breast with a 32-calibre revolver. Byron has been employed by the Consolidated Gas Company. Yesterday morning he left his home to go to work at the usual hour. About 9 o'clock he returned home partly drunk. Byron's mother lives with him, and Byron's wife charges her with leading her husband to abuse his wife. When Byron came in yesterday morning his wife accused him of being drunk and neglecting his work. Byron said he would kill himself, but she didn't believe him and left the room. A few minutes later she heard a pistol shot, and found her husband lying near the stove in a pool of blood. Officer Nealis of the sanitary squad and Policeman Harrigan of the Twenty-fifth precinct were summoned, and the wounded man was taken to the Presbyterian Hospital. His condition is critical. Mrs. Byron says that if her husband recovers he must choose between his mother and his wife. Byron's mother had evidently been drinking when she called at the hospital yesterday afternoon."---The Sun, New York, New York, issue 06 Dec 1888, p.6.
