The Vicksburg campaign was waged from March 29 to July 4, 1863. It included battles in west-central Mississippi at: Port Gibson, Raymond, Jackson, Champion Hill, Big Black River and 47 days of Union siege operations against the city of Vicksburg. Located high on the bluffs, Vicksburg was a fortress guarding the Mississippi River. It was known as "The Gibraltar of the Confederacy." Its surrender on July 4, 1863, coupled with the fall of Port Hudson, Louisiana, divided the South, and gave the North undisputed control of the Mississippi River. Nixon. I can verify most of the information that you have posted and can update information regarding James Hamilton Nixon and down. I was just at the cemetery where James H. Nixon is buried this weekend accumulating additional information. I don't know if the information posted is yours or if you posted it for someone else, I will await your response on that. I will tell you that John W--W is for Wallace--died in 1863 at the battle of Vicksburg and is buried there. He volunteered for the CSA at a late age as they need a Blacksmith. My mother's Nixon family line originates through Robert Nixon, b. 1780 Antrim (SP?) County Ireland arrived U. S. circa 1800, N.C. Met and married Charlotte Walker of N.C. c. 18?? possibly 1815 . Apparently served in the late stages of the Rev. War, or the War of 1812, for which he acquired land grant privileges which accured to his minor daughter Martha "Patsy" Nixon in Dekalb Co., Tenn. circa 1850 (this maybe an in correct year since date is from recall rather than document). When this grant was awarded to Patsy Nixon after Robert's death in 1835, it is not established as to benefits bestowed to other children, none are know to the writer. My great grandfather was Nepthieli Nixon , twin son ( other twin Levi Nixon, married (1) Saluda Ashley (2) ? Inge both of Smith Co., TN ) of Robert and Charlotte, married Elizabeth Ashley in Smith County Tennessee circa 1850's. (1) Beady Nixon (2) William Nixon (3) My grandfather , James N. Nixon married (1) unknown (2) Liza Jane McCaleb in Smith Co. Tn. c. 1876. They had three children born to their marriage while living in TN , the last of those, was Geneva Elizabeth , b. 1889 in Davidson County, TN. By 1890 they were on census in Waco, McLennan , Texas where their fourth child, Erchel Carman Nixon was born in 1891. My mother, Beatrice Irene was born in 1894 in McLennan or Navarro County Texas. Liza Jane Nixon died in 1927. James N. Nixon died in Rusk Co., Texas in 1946 with burial in City of Kilgore Cemetery, Kilgore, Gregg, Texas. The similarity of names between those mentioned in your message below and Robert Nixon's family lead me to ponder the possibility of family ties. I would like the opportunity to discuss these possibilities with you. Is it possible your Francis Nixon was married to a Mary Walker in N.C., that being the point of entry of Robert Nixon into the U.S. and marrying a Walker there! Many similarities in family histories! Please consider it. My regards, Charles Brightwell * Subj: Re: Nixons from John Wallace Nixon Date: 7/17/03 10:45:43 AM Pacific Daylight Time From: ycowboy@@ix.netcom.com To: VCJFreeman@@aol.com Valerie - Hi Valerie! I know that it has been a long time, but I just found some possible info on John Wallace Nixon.... As I remember he isn't from your family, but you were researching him anyway, to keep his 'get' <grin> seperate from your tree... Do you knw Jonathan Neal(i)s email address, and if he is still doing well? The info that I have for JWN might place him in Hickman county, TN in 1830. As you know, the 1830 only lists the ages of the people in the family, and the head of the family's name. I have a John Nixon, 20-30, 1 girl 10-15, 1 girl 15-20 and 1 woman 40-50. It is a long shot, but the age matches JWN and wife Eleanor (17-18). The other 2 F's might be mother and sister (in-law?)
