Note: LOST ALL MY NOTES ON MOTHER AND DADDY JULY 2, 2011 ~~~WHAT'S GOING ON. WHO KNOWS HOW MANY OTHERS I LOST <GROAN> My father, William Vernon Braddock, was born in Miami, Florida September 8, 1910 to Leavy Francis Braddock and Mary Amanda Campbell. He was called "Vernon" all his life. From the time of his birth until 1917 the family lived in Miami. He started elementary school when he was eight years old. Since his father was a Conductor for the Florida East Coast Railroad, the family moved to Jacksonville in 1917 and lived at 1235 Laura Street (originally 1435 Laura Street, according to Daddy). Daddy was baptized at the First Baptist Church in downtown Jacksonville at Hogan and Church Streets which was near his home on Laura Street. Daddy went to Kirby Smith Junior High School and then to Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville. He played right tackle for the football team at Andrew Jackson. During his high school years he transferred to the Florida Military Institute at 201 Ledwith Avenue, Haines City, Florida where he graduated with diploma on May 14, 1933. At FMI he played football, baseball, track and wrestling. They lived on Laura Street in Jacksonville from 1917 to 1932 when my Grandfather move the family back to Miami because of his job with the railroad. At that time the family lived at 558 N. W. 43 Street, Miami, FL. In the fall of 1933 Daddy went to Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University), Auburn, Alabama on a football scholarship and majored in history. Daddy met my Mother when he was living at 558 N. W. 43 Street in Miami. They married April 17, 1934 and lived at 940 N. W. 43 Street, Miami, Florida during the time when all three of their daughters were born. Daddy worked for the Florida Power and Light Co. from 1936 - 1941 when the company was bought by the City of Miami. He continued to work as a Foreman Pipe fitter with the City of Miami Water Department until 1969 when he retired. Daddy served with the U. S Navy from Nov. 26, 1943 to Dec. 4, 1945. He had his training in Bainbridge, Maryland and Norfolk, Virginia. He served on the **shakedown cruise of the U.S.S. Lyman K. Swenson, DD729 Destroyer See: http://www.angelfire.com/mi/gjsmoyer/xhista.html & http://www.navsource.org/archives/05/729.htm In January 1951 they bought a house at 2475 Lincoln Avenue in Coconut Grove and lived there until August 29, 1973 when they moved to Orange City, Florida.
