Note: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=bartondwyer&id=I0306 julia's tree Veronika has his death as 1830, aged 77, and this would make him born c1753. Have not found any Thomas C born around that time in Gaddesden. There are a couple in nearby Beds villages that could be him. The most likely pair are Richard COOK and Elizabeth WOOD, who married in Whipsnade 1752. Thomas COOK was bapt to Richard and Eliz 1754 in Eaton Bray, also James and Mary. Later Eliz and Jesse were bapt to R and E in Gaddesden, and a Mary died there. It is very feasible that R and E moved to Gaddesden, which is just South of E Bray and Whipsnade. Thomas was a miller, and millers George and Samuel in Berkhampstead in 1841and 1851 look like his sons. Also Thomas and John in Gt Gaddesden in 1841 are other likely sons. gosh..there were Thomas Cooks in Berkampstead in 1419!! x julia... Thomas COOK died date unknown. He married Martha ANDREW on 01 Feb 1759 in Great Gaddesden, Herts More About Thomas COOK and Martha ANDREW: Marriage: 01 Feb 1759, Great Gaddesden, Herts Children of Thomas COOK and Martha ANDREW are: 1. John COOK, b. 08 Jan 1760, d. date unknown. 2. Mary COOK, b. 27 Sep 1761, d. date unknown. 3. +Thomas COOK, b. 02 Sep 1764, d. date unknown. I believe I also have 2 of their other sons, miller George (1786) and miller Samuel(1801) in 1841, as well, of course, as William(1783) my own ancestor. In 1851 I think I have George, Samuel and John again, and maybe their sister Elizabeth(1790), age 60 and unmarried in Hemel Hempstead. http://www.hertsfhs.org.uk/hfphs2.html simple map of Herts x mike Thomas COOK (1) - husband of Mary X. You show a birth on 22/4/1759 in GG and Nettledon and a christening on 2/9/1764. I have found no birth as yet, but the Herts.Burial Index shows a Thomas COOK of 'North Hill', G.G., age 77, buried on 11/12/1830 [and incidentally a Mary COOK 'of Monk Hill' buried on 23/5/1824, aged 65] - suggesting their respective births to be c.1753 and c.1759. Parish Registers show similar burial data, citing 'Noak Mill' as their residence. I have P.Reg.data of a marriage between Thomas COOK and Mary HOWARD on 2/8/1779 in GG. This date is consistent with their ages , and with the dates of subsequent children. [An interesting fact - a year before, on 12/6/1778, a Thomas COOK and a Mary HOWARD were witnesses to the wedding in GG between an Elizabeth HOWARD, 'otp', (sister?) and an Edward PERRATT]. [Intriguing: 40 years later on 25/11/1819 a George COOK married a Sarah HOWARD...]. Corn and Dishonesty : an Honest Miller - How is it that there has been, apparently from time immemorial, a very general belief that every one dealing with corn, other than the grower, was dishonest? No other trade - the grocer, butcher, or dairyman - for example - possesses this ill-favour to so great an extent 'The popular view was brought to my mind recently when I was recording the inscriptions in Great Gaddesden Churchyard, where Cussans stated on the north side was a wooden rail inscribed, "In memory of Mr Thomas Cook late of Noak Mill in this parish, who departed this life Dec 8th 1830, aged 77. He was a good husband and tender father, and an honest man, although a miller" I was unable to discover this memorial, and fear that during the thirty years or so that have elapsed since Cussans wrote his "History of Hertfordshire," it has become decayed and been removed W B Gerish, Bishops Stortford and just in case... GREAT GADDESDEN (see Noak Mill)******************** Gatesdene (xi cent.). Great Gaddesden parish lies to the north of Hemel Hempstead, on the south-east spur of the Chiltern Hills, and is intersected from north-west to south-east by the valley of the Gade, which rises in the north of the parish. In the valley is meadow-land, and the higher slopes are covered with beech and fir woods. The parish covers an area of 4,150 acres, and in 1905 comprised 2,262 acres of arable land, 1,183 acres of permanent grass and 310 acres of woodland. (fn. 1) It includes the hamlet of Gaddesden Row, two miles north-east of the village, which has a school and mission-room of its own, and Water End where, shaded by large trees and close to a broad pool of the river, are clustered a few old redbrick red-tiled cottages. There too is an old mill called Noak Mill, and at a little distance Gaddesden Hall Farm. This farm-house is apparently the manor-house belonging to the manor known as Southall or Oliver's Place. The land in the east is high, standing 500 ft. and more above the ordnance datum, and all around are somewhat steep rises and falls, there being a fall of at least 180 ft. to Great Gaddesden village. The subsoil is chalk, and consequently several chalk-pits exist in the neighbourhood, and there are also large watercress beds by the river side. The great feature of the parish, however, is its extensive parks and exceptionally fine timber. The park of Gaddesden Place, the seat of the Rt. Hon. T. F. Halsey, P.C., J.P., which was lately burnt, and is now being rebuilt, is about 150 acres in extent, and there are also large grounds belonging to Golden Parsonage, the residence of Mr. H. G. Tylecote, and at the Hoo there is a small piece of common land to the north of the parish, which is known by the name of Hedgeswood Common. The little village of Gaddesden consists of the church, a farm-house and a group of cottages, and lies just off the high road between Leighton Buzzard and Hemel Hempstead. more NOAK MILL... At Picott's-End, and at Noak Mill, in the vicinity of the town of Hemel Hempstead, are saline and chalybeate springs, said to be similar to the waters of Cheltenham; and many petrifactions of sponge and other fossils, susceptible of a very high polish, are found in the vicinity, which abounds likewise with fine specimens of chalcedony
