It lies on the southern slopes of the Downs towards Chichester, to the south of the parishes of West Dean and Binderton, It measures about 2 miles from north to south and the same from east to west. The River Lavant flows through it from north to south, The railway runs parallel to the river and the road. Since July 1935 the line has been used only for goods traffic. The church of St Mary has its roots in the 12th century but the only visual remains is the west wall. Both of the naive walls were lost to aisles in the 13th century. The churchs best features are the Norman west doorway and a round arch with chevron decoration, and the brick tower of 1671. All the very old stones in the churchyard have been removed and used as paving stones for the path. Three large tomb slabs have been used to make 3 steps on the westside. http://www.sussex-opc.org/PostOffice1851/EastLavantPostOffice1851.htm Post Office Directory 1851, East Lavant, West Sussex -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- East Lavant is a pleasant village, 3 miles north-west from Chichester, in Aldwick hundred, rape of Chichester, Westhampnett union. The date of their marriage in the certificate was June 21, 1817. Their marriage date in the church register was June 22, 1817. The marriage took place in Petworth. The certificate indicates that James is from Northchapel and Elizabeth is from Petworth. I had always assumed the birth date of James to be in 1795/96, based on the Peel Township census I reviewed in 1851 and 1861. But then a person (I didn't retain her name, sorry) I had corresponded with a number of years ago insisted that James lied about his age and the birth date in 1793 was correct. She also gave me the information (birth date and parents) for Elizabeth. She never gave me much for verification (word of mouth). I should have known better, because the age of James at the time they were married was 21 years. Elizabeth was also shown in the certificate as 21 years old. I obtained the marriage certificate and church register from the Record Office in Sussexshire. I also have the birth records of some of the children from the Record Office, including Abraham, William, and Thomas (all born in Lurgashall). The parents of James, as indicated in my information, was an assumption, based on Record Office information. I had never confirmed it. I had submitted some information to Wendy Cameron back in the late 1980s for the book she was to eventually write regarding the Petworth Emigration Scheme. A person name Frances Acres also included some information for the James and Elizabeth Wakeford in the book, "Assisting Emigration to Upper Canada, The Petworth Project 1832-1837" by Wendy Cameron and Mary McDougall Maude. Through a lot of work and verification of information by these two ladies, a limited number of books were finally published in 2000. Also, in the book was a William Wakeford, who had married Maria Jennings. He was shown as baptized October 27, 1793. His family was shown as being from East Lavant, Sussexshire, England, and they came to Canada in 1835 http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/petworth.html#bur -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Burrell 1835, Burrell, barque, A1, 402 tons; master J. The list summarizes available sources for information on families and individuals. See also the companion volume English Immigrant Voices: Labourers' Letters from Upper Canada in the 1830s. http://www.petworthemigrations.com/ Thankyou very much for pointing out the error in the list of early emigrants to Canada. I will pass the information on to the researchers who maintain the list of emigrants under the Petworth Emigration Scheme. It is interesting that the East Lavant Vestry received a request for help to emigrate from William Wakeford, but he subsequently did not go.
