Emmitsburg: History and Society, 1976, The Emmitsburg Chronicle, from statement of Mrs. Robert Patterson, contemporary:
In April, 1809, the Fleming farm had been purchased as a site for the Sisters' residence and free school. A down payment was made and installments followed at intervals. Robert eventually repented of having disposed of his farm and demanded that the next payment should be made in gold eagles. In this predicament, Mother Seton consulted Mr. James Hughes, who volunteered his help; he hurried on horseback to Philadelphia, secured the money from Rev. Samuel Cooper, and returned by way of Baltimore, where he obtained more gold eagles. He hastened back to Emmitsburg, the precious funds in a small trunk set in front of him. Mr. Hughes and his cargo arrived at the White House, and this good Samaritan was invited to dinner, served in a room remote from the main or south entrance. To the latter spot rode up Robert Fleming, almost on the heels of James Hughes. Expecting a foreclosure, he was astounded when Mother Seton informed him that his demands had been met. His eyes shone as he gazed on the concentration of gold eagles, the most he had ever seen. In commemoration of the incident, Robert Fleming was henceforth accorded the title of "Spread-Eagle". With the gold eagles he purchased a farm in Ohio, and his nickname followed him to his new home.

The 1790 Census lists Nathaniel Patterson as head of household with 5 free persons and 3 slaves. In later years the Patterson family gained prominence in the Buckeystown area and made generous contributions to the construction of St. Joseph Catholic Church there (Names in Stone, Harney Presbyterian, p. 85) HAVE HIS WILL, need to connect our line
A search of these church records at ACHS gives no Robert: St. Lukes Lutheran, Carroll Co, New Windsor; St Benjamin's (Kreiders), Pipe Creek Presbyterian, St. Marys in Silver Run, Emmanuel Baptist, MD German Church records. There is no Church record on Robert and His family - he probably attended the closest Presbyterian Church to Emmitsburg, Ton's Creek, but its records burned in ________.
Robert's Will, Butler County, Ohio, 1824, old will book L, page 322; archives testamentary 2, page 138:Written August 13, 1824, entered into Probate October 2, 1924, Butler County, OH (HAVE COPY):
have heretofore given an advance to my son Robert and to my daughter Jane, intermarried with George Lneesly (Neeley?), such parts of my estates as I believed fell to their share, I therefore dispose to my daughter Allice, intermarried with William Porter, son Thomas farm of 160 acres, my clock and bureau; to son Joseph 2 farms of 206 acres total, my saddle horse, my desk and money equal to two years rent of the farms to be used for repairing the dwelling house and other buildings; to son Samuel my house and lot in Hamilton (the nearest town) plus $2,00 owed to me by John Sutherland. To my black woman Dolly and her son Andrew, I give 28 acres, as tenants-in-common, which I purchased October 6, 1823, to belong solely to Andrew at her death; also to Dolly one good bed, bedding and bedstead; to my colored by Robert or Bob, the son of Dolly and who is now held as a slave and is with my son Robert Fleming in Maryland, I give his freedom; to my sons Thomas, Joseph and Samuel, I give each of them their be, bedstead and bedding and articles of household utensils which had been set apart and designated to them, and also their saddles, bridles and the like; the residue of my estate including cash on hand to sons Thomas and Joseph. In case Andrew, the son of my black woman, should predecease her, she will hold their land, and if he dies without issue, lineal or collateral, their land is to go to my three sons Thomas, Joseph and Samuel. Thomas and John Reily of Hamilton were executors and Guardians of son Samuel during his minority
Robert was 68 years old when he died. The Will does not mention either his wife Jannett Patterson Fleming, so she must have predeceased him, nor son Nathaniel Patterson Fleming, mentioned in Jannetts fathers Will (Nathaniel Patterson), so perhaps he had also died. His children were Nathaniel, Robert, Jane, Alice, Thomas, Joseph, Samuel (who was less than 21 when his father wrote his Will). Why give the land to Dollys son? Roberts illegitimate son?
OUR Robert and his family were always very poor, never owned land, so he must have gone through his money, and the slave Bob, very quickly after getting it from his father prior to 1824
