a. Note:   From Jesse Mayfield: In this 3rd generation from #1 Joseph Vick, some family members moved into the county gentry. Josiah Vick, son of Richard Vick, was the first family members to become part of the inner circle of Southampton County political power. He inherited his father's plantation while still a boy and his inheritance included a unique legacy; money was set aside for his education. Wealthy, shrewd and educated, he rose to be a local leader. He was elected Captain in the local Militia and eventually became a justice of the county court.
