Furtick address: Rienzi date of burial: Feb. 22, 1928 Rube's hair was white from age 25 until his death. He ran around on Ozella all their married life according to Aunt Grace Burress Batavia and Mrs. Charlie Bearden. A married woman from Ripley had a lengthy affair with Rube. She was an aunt of Olen Burress' first wife. This woman's husband would get out of bed when Rube would come over (Sally Green). Mrs. Bearden says Rube "studded himself out in several counties". Rube moved the family alot and never stayed home. He'd stay a few days at a time and then would leave. He cut timber for a living. The family was usually isolated and living in poverty. After he'd cut all the timber, he'd move them to another location. He would go off with the wagon and team and Ozella would be stranded at home for days without transportation. Aunt Grace says Rube was born in Jasper, Alabama and was about 3 months old when his Daddy, Reuben, was killed in a well. Samantha moved here to be near family. Ozella and Rube had 11 children. The kids called him "Poppy". I asked Aunt Grace is Rube drank. She said he didn't because it upset his stomach. Interview with Ruby Burress Jackson-Ozella lost 4 babies before she had one to live. Ozella told Ruby it was because she was too young to be having kids. She was only 14 when they married. Rube hated farming. He moved a good bit. He started buying timber and saw milling. He worked for Cochran Lumber Yard until he died of pneumonia. He lived in a house on the lumber yard owned by the Cochrans. They were very good to Rube and Ozella. After Rube died, Mr. Cochran loaned Ozella the money to buy Grace and Ruby winter coats. They always found things from him at Christmas time. He was truly their Santa Claus.
