Note: . He died on 2 Mar 1866 in Van Buren, Crawford co, AR. March 3 1866... ATROCIOUS MURDER. A murder was committed on Saturday night last. Mr. Nicholas Aiken, an old and well known citizen of our county was found on Sunday morning, lying near his own gate, dead, having received some thirteen stabs; one serious one in the back near his spinal column, and two or three fatal ones in the breast. Dorastus PAYNE, a man living about two miles from the deceased, is accused of committing this murder. An examination was had before Justices STONE and MARZELL. The testimony was entirely of a circumstantial character and quite lengthy, but was considered sufficiently strong, by the court, to hold the prisoner for trial before the Circuit Court. It was also held not to be a bailable case. PAYNE was defended by H.F.THOMASON, Esq. and the State was represented by Granville WILCOX, Esq. As the case is only partially disposed of, we forbear making and comment upon it. His reference number is A1-2.
