a. Note:   Name: Norman from his father; Francis from his Grandfather Ballard. Norman was raised by his Greer Grandparents until the age of13 when he was sent to live with Grandmother Edith Adella Ballard. Edith had remarried, John S. Abbott, and after three years, Norman left to find his own way. Norm's father then aided his support by giving him the money it would cost to hire someone to take care of him. Norm worked for the railroad, learned the barber trade and was a Boy Scout Leader. By the time he was just 19 he had married Fay; they soon separated and later divorce Norm loved helping children, especially young boys. He sent money to support the orphaned boys in Boys Town until his death. Because of his devotion to help youngsters, Norm set the best example he could. He worked for and was awarded Eagle Scout with the Bronze Palm plus the Scout Master's Key. In scouting, he achieved the highest ranks available. Countless children benefited from Norm's teaching and devotion to them. SCOUTING AWARDS: Eagle Scout, Eagle Bronze Palm and the Scout Master's Key. He received: - Certification as a Life Saving Instructor from the American Red Cross - Certificate of Scoutmastership - A five year Veteran Award in recognition of his scouting wor In the August 28, 1932 primary election, Norm ran for Supervisor of District No. 4 and lost. He left Oregon to pursue the California sun. In 1934 in Modesto, he addressed the Toastmasters Club on the history of Barbering. He was secretary of the Journeyman Barbers Union Local No. 787. Norm met and married Angelina Louise Vesia. The two worked in barber and beauty shops. Norma was born. Norm built a house. The family eventually moved to Southern California where Vicki was born. Norm put himself through school to become an aeronautical engineer specializing in fuel injection systems. He played an integral part in helping Neil Armstrong take those first steps on the moon. For years he flew to 'The Cape' every other week and took his wife to watch Apollo 009 launch (Angie said, "It was a blast!"). He retired from North American Aviation, Inc. after 35 years. In 1960, he and Angie went to Europe for a 3-month tour, giving Ange the opportunity to see where her roots began. While there, they bought a Triumph Sports car and toured many countries. Norm's favorite sport was golfing and he became pretty good (there's the story about Norm joining a foursome in Las Vegas and ending up getting tickets to see Frank Sinatra for Angie. He sold real estate and then went back into the barbering business part time. He loved clothes and looking good; he loved watching his wife, always the life of the party. He was always fun whether with his adult friends or with their children's teenage friends. Norm was devastated by the loss of Angie. His will to live went with her. He moved to Leisure World in Seal Beach but it wasn't for him. He eventually moved in with his daughter Norma but fell, was hospitalized and then moved to a nursing / rehab home. Upon his return to Norma's his health continued to deteriorate. One day he told Norma he had a friend visiting him, who was waiting in the corner, but he didn't know his name. It was Norm's transportation angel; he went home with him the next night on November 13, 2002. He finally got to meet his mother.
