a. Note:   Vesia, Angelina Age: 13Year: 1930 Roll: T626_210 Page: 12A State: California Ed: 8 County:San Joaquin Image: 0714 Township: Dent Relationship: Daughter Name: Angelina from her father's mother Angela, Louise from her mother's middle name. Angie, the oldest of 8 children consisting of six sisters and one brother spent the first 6 years of her life living in Oakland and Berkeley. Her parents purchased 40 acres of farmland in Escalon and the family moved around 1923. Her father grew almond trees, her mother had a garden and a few chickens. At the suggestion of her aunt, she entered Cosmetology School, graduating in 1933; aged 17. Ange prospered with her career working at such places as La Parisienne Beaute Salon and Hinds Beauty Shop in Modesto. She eventually opened "Ange's Beauty Shop at 919 1/2 Tenth Street in Modesto. You could get a permanent wave from $2.00 to $5.00. She shared her income with her family. At the same time, she was dating Norman Francis Greer, her brother and sisters accompanied them on dates. When she was 19 years old, on a bread box, in back of a Safeway Store, Norman Francis Greer proposed. They were married November 3, 1935. Their first daughter, Norma Lee was born in Modesto, CA on August 28, 1937. The family moved to Southern California and Vicki Ann was born in Huntington Park January 13, 1942. Ange worked in cosmetology in Beverly Hills and after the family moved to Hermosa Beach, she purchased the Mar Vista beauty shop. Often, celebrities would come into the shop and have a "finger wave". Ange invited orphans to the salon, cutting and styling their hair. In 1947, she retired, selling her business and the family moved to Redondo Beach where they lived for 26 years; first at 519 South Helberta and then one street below at 509 South Gertruda. Angie filled her days with PTA, Girl Scouts, American Field Service, School Board and raising two girls. She received many awards from the community. Once while visiting her family in Escalon, a child was lost and she went right out and helped find the 3 year old girl. She helped the community by illustrating Braille books for the blind and nearly blind children and cried when she saw how much the children loved the books. She made all the arrangements to have J. C. Penny's carry scouting uniforms for sale. She was offered a percentage but chose to donate it to the Girl Scouts of America. All her efforts for the community were rewarded when she was twice nominated as Woman of the Year (1959 and 1960). In 1960 she received the Citizen of the Year award. Angie and Norm moved to Leisure World for a short time but decided it wasn't the life for them. They heard about a new mobile home park and were the first to move in. Later Ange ran the craft center at Villa Valencia Mobile Home Estates. Ange's health was always good but unknown to all, a tumor had been growing in her brain for probably 40 years. It later robbed her of her personality and eventually her speech turning to dementia. She always knew who her husband and children were until the day she passed, peacefully at home March 19, 2000...her daughter Vicki by her side. Her neighbors and friends remember her as a talented, loving, caring woman who was a gracious hostess always making everyone feel special.
