Their children and their spouses are Rik and Linda Vigeland of Canby and Chris Vigeland and Claudia Schouten and Sheri and Jim Schwiegert, all of Eugene. The couple have nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He worked as head saw-filer for Rosboro, Seneca and Barker sawmills. He is retired. She managed the couple’s rental properties and was a homemaker. She is a member of the Ebbert Memorial United Methodist Church. Haplogroup R1b1a2a1a1a4. Obituary: Charles Kenneth Vigeland - Charlie or Chuck to friends and family - was born June 22, 1930, in Silverton, Oregon, and passed away July 19th, 2016, at River Bend Hospital in Springfield, surrounded by family. He died from complications of respiratory failure. Charlie’s parents were Hans Olsen Vigeland, a native of Vennesla, Norway, and Verda Mae Jensen, born in Viborg, South Dakota, to a Danish family. He was the youngest of four children, and the first native English speaker in his family. He was born at home and attended all 12 years of school in Silverton. In high school he was active in football and track, and was president of the letterman’s club, the Orangemen. He spent his first two years after high school graduation in the woods as a logger. On August 26, 1950, he married Margie Hahn. They soon moved to Springfield, where Charlie began learning the trade of saw filer. Charlie became skilled at the sharpening and repair of all manner of saws and tools, and worked at several local mills, including Rosboro, Barker-Willamette, Tangfeldt, and Seneca. After retirement he still continued to be a substitute saw filer into his early 70’s. Charlie and Margie lived in Springfield for over 65 years of marriage and raised three children there. Charlie was always an enthusiastic supporter of their sports and hobbies, especially track and field. Charlie and Margie fixed up and managed several rental properties over the years. Charlie was skilled in many areas. He could build walls, fences, and decks, repair plumbing and electrical works, and performed landscaping work. He helped friends and family with the repair of car bodies and engines. In the 1970’s, he took up learning the Norwegian language, in which he became quite fluent. On his first trip to Norway he celebrated his 50th birthday in his father’s home town. In the 1980’s Charlie took up jogging for his health and participated in numerous 5K and 10K runs and two half-marathons. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, sister Viola Brown, sister Judy Irwin, brother Herman Vigeland, nephew Gary Brown and niece Carol Hilterbrand. He is survived by his wife Margie, daughter Sheri Schweigert (with husband Jim), son Chris, son Rik (with wife Linda), six grandchildren (Sara Gill, Emily Watts, Anna Vigeland Pickering, Laura Vigeland, Kelly Kent and Chris Schweigert), nine great-grandchildren, brothers- and sisters-in law, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families. He lived to see all his grandchildren graduate from college and start jobs, and he was very proud of all his family. Charlie was always quick to greet visitors with a hug or a handshake. He loved to joke, tease, and play with his grandchildren. He talked politics and current affairs through his final days. He will always be remembered for his warmth, kindness, humor, and generosity. At his request, there will be no memorial service. His ashes will be buried at Valley View (Evans Valley) Cemetery, in Silverton, near his parents and brother.
