"Eulogy Delivered on Dec. 9, 1982 in Memory of James M. Deacon" by V. A. Jackson, M.D.
James M. Deacon was born in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, February 19, 1905. The son of a Methodist minister, his family moved from place to place as Methodist ministers usually do.
"Deac" attended and graduated from Auburn High School in western Kentucky and received his college degree from Kentucky Wesleyan College in Winchester, where he met his future wife some 55 years ago. He later received his Master's Degree from U. K.
For 43 years Deac was affiliated with the Lexington public school system and served as assistant school superintendent for several years before his retirement.
The Deacons have two sons. Deac and I became rather close friends several years ago and, for the last several years, I have considered him one of my very best friends. In fact, Marie and I knew for a while before the date of his death that she would be out of town the day of the Villanova basketball game. So, the night before Deac's death, I told her I was going to ask Deac to use her ticket and go to that game with me. His daughter-in-law called the next day to say that Deac had died.
As most of you know, Deac has been a member of this Rotary club since December 3, 1964, and served on the Attendance Committee for several years.
In closing, let me say that the highest compliment that I can pay a man is to say that "He was an honest gentleman." Deac was that kind of a man.
"We cannot know how much we learn From those who will never return, Until a flash of unforseen rememberence, falls on what has been." Will you please join me for a moment of silent prayer in memory of a beautiful Christian.
