Notes
a. Note:   Thomas Wilson Vincent was born May 13, 1846, the fourth child of James Ray Vincent and Susannah Pitman. We find Thomas at age 6 in the 1851 Canadian census, living with his family in Thurlow Township, Hastings County, Ontario. He was still there in 1861 at age 15, described as a laborer and in school. Neither Thomas nor his parents were located in the 1871 Canada census or in the 1870 US census.
Thomas moved back and forth between Canada and the US several times during his adult life. The 1900 US census indicated that Thomas came to the US in 1870, had been here for 30 years and was a naturalized citizen of the US. It also indicated that he had been married for 30 years to Rosina who was born in Wisconsin. We do not know if he came to the US and then married or was married in Canada. James Brown Vincent, his brother, reportedly moved from Canada to Michigan in 1865 so Thomas may have followed him there in 1870.
James Ray Vincent, Thomas' father, apparently moved to the US in May 1870 to homestead a farm in Kansas. James Brown Vincent, Thomas' brother, homesteader the adjacent farm in April 1870. It is likely that Thomas and his new wife moved to Kansas with them. We know that Thomas was in Kansas in April 1871 when he signed as a witness on land purchase papers for his father's farm. Census records indicate that his first son Charles was born in Kansas. Judy Vincent Barnes provided information that Charles was born on November 17, 1870 in Kansas so Thomas was apparently living there in the 1870-71 time period.
Birth records show that Thomas' daughter Effie was born in Thurlow Township, Hastings County, Ontario in August 1872 so Thomas' family apparently had moved back to Canada by then. His son Thomas was also born in Thurlow Township in June 1875.
Sheridan Vincent reviewed an index of land transactions in Thurlow Township that listed three in which Thomas sold or bought land. No dates were in the index. Perhaps the two sales were when Thomas moved to the US about 1870 and 1880 and the one purchase was when he returned to Canada about 1872. These land records are likely in the Thurlow Township offices.
Thomas W. and wife Rosina were in Saginaw County, Michigan in 1883 when they signed an affidavit related to the sale of the Kansas farm upon the death of James Ray Vincent. They apparently moved to Jackson, Michigan by 1891. Search results from Ancestry. com for Vincent (47), T-520 (857),MI(41280) finds him at 425 N. 9th, East Saginaw, MI in 1889 and 126 S. Bond, Saginaw, Michigan in 1890-both years show his occupation as a carpenter.
The 1900 census found them at 326 Pringle Ave., Jackson, Michigan. This is approximately at the intersection of Pringle Ave. and Airline Drive on the east edge of the present downtown district near the Grand River. Their daughter Effie (26) was living with them. Their sons Charles and Thomas were living nearby. Thomas W. was described as a carpenter.
According to Jackson, Michigan City Directories, Thomas Sr. worked as a carpenter in 1891-94 and as a janitor for Pleasant Street School in 1896-98. He again worked as a carpenter in 1900-1906. Sometime between 1907 and 1909 he moved to Kansas.
Thomas died of a stroke on January 26, 1909 in Shawnee County, Kansas, the county that includes Topeka. We do not know if he was living in Topeka or just died there. He had been an I. O. O. F. member and was buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery at Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas. This is the county adjacent to Topeka. We do not know why Thomas moved to the Topeka/Perry area or why he was buried in the cemetery in Perry.
From information from Stve Clark, PGM of the Grand Lodge of Kansas I received this information on Thomas's IOOF membership:
He joined the IOOF (Oddfellows) in Perry, Kansas at Hope Lodge #45 on March 31, 1894 and was an active member in the Lodge achieving the highest position of the Lodge. Before he could accomplish this achievement he was required to serve in several appointed and elective positions. Steve Clark, PGM, Grand Lodge of Kansas. sclark@@cessa.textron.com
His brother Sanford pastored a church in Perry in 1893. More information now why he was in Topeka/Perry area from Richar Wellman from the Jefferson County Genealogical Society:
FUNERAL OF T. W. VINCENT From The Perry Mirror of 28 Jan. 1909, page 4, col. 6
The death of Thomas W. Vincent, aged 63 years, occurred in Topeka Monday night, due to Apoplexy. The remains were shipped to Perry this morning and laid to rest in Oak Ridge cemetery. The deceased was a member of the I.O.O.F. at Perry, and this order had charge of the services at the grave. Mr. Vincent, some 20 years ago resided in Perry, working at the carpenter's trade. He was the brother of the Rev. Sanford Vincent, who was at that time pastor of the Perry Methodist church.

NOTES FROM TIM VINCENT-SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH-GREAT GRANDSON OF JULIAN VINCENT (JULIAN VINCENT IS CHARLES ELBERT VINCENT'S OLDEST SON)
Thomas may very likely have moved from Canada with both parents and brother James Brown, if not his entire family, to Iowa. Thomas and Rosina moved to Kansas about June or July of 1870 and it was there that their son, Charles was born. The exact place of their residence is not known. Sometime in the summer of 1871 the young family moved back to Foxboro, Ontario to Thomas' old childhood home. Effie and Thomas Jr. was born there. In Thurlow Twp. the family lived in Lot nmber two of the fifth Concession. Thomas and Rosina sold their property on 4 November 1875 for three hundred dollars. Mr. Henry Valderwater from Sidney in Hastings County bought the property. Thomas was to receive a payment annually in 1877, 1877 and 1878 for the land sold.
Soon thereafter, the family with the three young children moved back to Kansas. Thomas was a carpenter or day laborer there, since he was not interested in farming.
Thomas was a handsome man of medium build. He had a solid forehead. His hair was parted on the left side and combed over and of medium legnth. Even in his later years, his black hair was only peppered with white hair, but the temples were all white. His light blue eyes were really striking with the large white bushy moustache he wore, almost resembling that of a walrus. His complexion was light and even though his hair was changing color, he had not a hint of any wrinkles on his face.
Rosina was a short, solidly built woman, but not overly plump. She wore her hair pulled to the back of her head. It remained dark all her life. She was suppposedly part Blackfoot Indian on her mother's side of the family.
In 1891 the Vincent family first arrived in Jackson, Michigan. They boarded at 127 Johnson Street. At that time, Thomas Vincent, Sr. was a carpenter. Daughter Effie was the only child at home when she and her parents moved to 227 Summit Avenue where they boarded. Thomas was a machinist for F. J. Hubbard.
By 1896 Thomas and Rosina moved and they boarded at 336 Pringle Street. Thomas worked for the Fuller Buggy Company and built carriage tops. Thomas Jr. also lived at home in 1896 through 1898 and he was a janitor at Pleasant Street School.
In 1898 Thomas Sr. and Rosina moved to 400 N. Pleasant Street and he continued to work for the Fuller Buggy Company. In 1900 Thomas changed jobs and he went to work as a carpenter and the family moved to 326 Pringle Street where they resided. In 1902 Thomas went to work for the City Lumber Company. In 1904 they moved to 112 Chapin Street and Thomas continued to work as a carpenter. They lived there until sometime in mid-1906.
Thomas and Rosina moved back to Kansas and lived in Shawnee County. They resided at 1204 Clay Street in Topeka and Thomas worked as a carpenter, despite his advancing age. He died on 25 January 1909 from a stroke. Thomas' brother, Sanford, was a Methodist minister then serving in Perry, just a few miles to the east in Jefferson County. Sanford performed the funeral service for his brother and Thomas was buried in Perry, Kansas in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Thomas Vincent had belonged to the I. O. O. F. and they were in charge of the funeral.
In early early summer of 1909. Rosina went on the train back through Chicago to Jackson. Upon arrival in town, she boarded at 212 E. Mason Street. She later married Joseph Conquest, perhaps in Genesee County, Michigan. By mid-1911 they were living in Clio.
After he died, Rosina moved back to Jackson and it was there that she married Louis Curry. She died at the home of her son, Charles Vincent, on South Pleasant Street on 12 February 1934 from old age.
