The Northern Neck was a proprietary, consisting of 5,282,000 acres, situated in the area between the Rappa-hannock and Potamac Rivers. In 1649 King Charles II, then exiled, gave this unsettled region to a small group his loyal supporters. By 1688 most of the region was owned by Thomas, Lord Culpeper. Lord Culpeper's daughter married Thomas, Lord Fairfax in 1690 and the region became synonymous with the Fairfax name
Beginning in 1690 grants were issued by agents of the proprietor. Individuals purchased warrants for a specific amount of land in a specific location. The warrants were taken to a surveyor and the land surveyed. The plat and any accompanying papers were returned to the proprietor's office and a grant was issued. The Northern
Neck proprietor's office and a grant was issued. The Northern Neck land office continued to operate during the Revolution. It was closed after Lord Fairfax's death in 1781. Fairfax family interest ceased in 1808 when the last surviving heir sold his title.

Gary: A lot of information to digest. The above will of Edward Violette clearly shows Eleanor was alive in 1773 when his will was presented to court. The signatories: Sibyl Vilet (w/o Ewell my line), Mary Kirk (probably d/o of Edward and Eleanor), Susan Vilet (probable d/o Edward and Eleanor) --helps to support the children of Edward and Eleanor Violet as I stated above.
Your line will come in my next e-mail. I have a lot of data that I must go through. There is a lot of confusion in placing the Edwards and the list of Edward Violette's heirs as stated in Violett Admrs vs Patterson, Chancery Case M1408.
Should you ever go to Mt. Vernon, there is a plaque there which states Edward Violette was overseer and his wife Eleanor milked cows, churned buter and supervised a slave woman in return for 1/4 of all the butter she could made. This plaque is dated 1762 and refers to our common ancestor.

I am looking for info on the family and ancestors of Edward VIOLET, born 1609 Kent Island and died 1772 Fairfax, VA. Father William Violet; his wife Eleanor SAUNDERS. Lawrence Martin
  http://www.owsleyfamily.com/stephensfamily.html
References to Robert Stephens (or Stevens) may be found as early as 6 March 1730, when, as a resident of Stafford County, he and Edward Violet received 446 acres under Northern Neck Grant number 226 (Northern Neck Grants, vol. C, p. 121). This land was described as being located on Long Branch of Accotink and Piney Branch of Dogues Run and was evenly partitioned by the Prince William County court on 16 August 1732 (Prince William Co. Deeds, vol. A, p. 327). On 17 August 1731, Burdet Harrison sold 161 acres in Prince William County, located near the head of the south run of Pohick to Robert Stephens for 1600 pounds of tobacco (Prince William Co. Deeds, vol. A, p. 79).
  http://www.cranfordumc.homestead.com/CranfordHistory.html
Cranford Church traces its history back to the 18th century. The plot of ground on which the church stands is a sacred and historic spot. It is the site of three churches and two schoolhouses. The first Pohick Church was located here from 1730-1774, making it one of the earliest sites of a religious institution in Fairfax County. One of the oldest stones in the cemetery is that of Thompson Clarke, who died March 8, 1842, aged 51 years. The old Pohick Church is supposed to have been located near this grave.
In 1765 when the old Pohick Church, which was a frame building, began to show symptoms of decay, the question of rebuilding or removal came before the vestry. George Washington favored removal to a more central site. George Mason of Gunston Hall opposed removal, pleading that their ancestors had worshipped at the old church and many of them were buried in the cemetery adjoining. Washington prepared a map of the neighborhood, showing the houses of the members of the congregation and pointed out as the central location that which the present
Pohick Episcopal Church occupies on US Route 1.

Three Generations of Violet/Violettes worked for Washington. Edward (Father and son) Overseer at the Muddy Hole Farm, John I and Edward (Sons of Edward) at the Bullskin Plantation and John II (son of John I and buried in Pike Co. Ohio) was overseer at the Union Farm. Several other Violets are mentioned in the farm records at Mount Vernon. Edward I had land that ended up on the Mount Vernon farms and I think is located at the Mill near Mount Vernon.

I have listed as children for Edward and Eleanor the following:
 1. Eleanor who married first John Littleton and second Samuel Clark.

Would like to make contact wuth you to compare notes.....does this

Hi, Mike, I saw your posting on GenForum. Your info on the Violet(te)s is pretty much what I have. I am descended from Edward and Elenor's son John and Jemimah Ramsey through their son John(1852?) who married first, Mary
Taylor, then Constance Trembly whose son was Benjamin. This John fought in the Revolution and received a Benefit Land warranty and came to Pike County, Ohio. Son Bejamin had son Martin, whose daughter Stella married James Hilling. My mother, Virginia, was their daughter. That's the short version. Perhaps we could
exchange some information. I have plenty of gaps to fill, and I'd be happy to help you if I can. Thanks, Jane
