M.A. Smith, Independence, Iowa Vera Corey, Independence, Iowa This document was hand written on yellow legal paper by someone other than Samuel Jamason as by the shakiness of his signature was not able to write well at the time. The will was contested. The following is from the History of Buchanan County, Iowa 1990. The article was submitted by Carole Duffy Schultes. Samuel and Mary (McInteer) Jamason Samuel Jamason was born in County Kilkenny, Ireland on 05-04-1844. He was the only son of Hugh (1810-1882) and Catherine (Butler)(1820-1860) Jamason who immigrated with him and their daughters, Mary (born 03-16-1836/died 04/28/1924), Anna (born 05-20-1839/died 12-30-1906) and Teresa (born 5-10-45/died 02-10/1921) at Albany, NY, 1847-1850. Later they moved to Wheaton, IL where Mary married Joseph Beck in 1854 and Anna married John Beck in 1856. Catherine died in 1860 and is buried in St. Stephen's Cemetery. Hugh eventually retired to Fort Dodge, Iowa to live with daughter Teresa (Mrs. John Welch) where he died and is buried in Corpus Christi Cemetery. At age 17, after his mother had died, Samuel moved from Wheaton, IL to Belle Plaine, Iowa to become a shoemaker. Eventually, despite a boyhood injury from playing with a "hoop," he purchased land and started farming. The next door neighbor girl, Mary McInteer, (born 05-01-1851) was very ill at one time and had a high fever. The doctor didn't expect her to live. Samuel, hearing the grim news, hitched a team and drove to Dubuque, Iowa for the only available ice which was placed around the girl, thus saving her life. Mary grew up and married her hero on 09-19-1870. Their eight children were: Catherine (born 07-21-1871/died 09-08-1871, Elizabeth (born 12-21-1872/died 12-25-1949) wife of William Donovan, Belle Plaine; Cecily Ann (born 06-10-1875/died 06-08-1886; Sara Ellen (born 11-02-1880-/died 08-07-1946), wife of Bert Sullivan, Independence, Iowa; Hanora Beatrice (born 03-22-1883/died 07-22-1969), wife of Dennis Sullivan, Independence, Iowa; Edward A. (born 04-07-1885/died 1936), husband of Rose Ann (Toomey), Independence,; Owen Leo (born 07-14-1888/died 06-23-1962),husband of Margaret (Russell), Independence, Ida Gertie Eva "Gertrude" (born01-14-1892/died1980), wife of Larry Tessier. Chadds Ford, PA. Tragedy struck on New Year's Eve when Mary Jamason developed pneumonia and died on 01-08-1898. Shortly after, Samuel moved his family to Buchanan County and purchased a farm 4 1/2 miles north of Independence on Highway 150. Four of his children married and raised families in Buchanan County. Edward was a well-known dealer in livestock, grain and coal in Independence; Leo owned a dairy and farmed on land where West Elementary Grade School now stands; Sara and Bert farmed, as did Hanora and Dennis. All four children have descendents still living in Buchanan County. I know these stories well because I heard them many times from my grandmother Hanora. I am Carole, a daughter of Cliff and Donna (Sullivan) Duffy, born and raised in Independence. After graduating from the University of Iowa, I married Robert J Schultes, M.D. 03-10-1973 in St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, Iowa. We now live in Bettendorf, Iowa with our three children, John (born 11-18-1978, Samuel (born 01-30-1984) and Honora (born01-13-1986). I have admired the spirit and perseverance of these ancestors who came through all their trials of life with such courage. I named my daughter, Honora Jamason Schultes after her great grandmother and my second son, Samuel Kitt Schultes, in memory of his great, great grandfather Samuel Jamason.
