  YELLOW PAPER IN OLD BIBLE
Depended Upon By Veteran to Secure Immediate Increase of Pension.
  SAYS HE IS SEVENTY
James Davis, a veteran of the Fourth-ninth Indiana Volunteers is depending on an old record sewed into a Bible which was printed in 1829 to bringing an increase of pension at once instead of in three years time.
According to his discharge papers Mr Davis is 67 years of age, his age at enlistment on that document appearing as 25 in the year 1865. The paper in the Bible, however, shows that he was born on May 20, 1837, making him 70 years old a few days ago. Capt. Coward, who is presenting his claim under the new pension law, expects the record will be accepted as proof of age.
The paper is a double sheet of writing paper sewed into the Bible and is yellow with age, the writing being much faded. It contains the marriage of Henry Davis, father, and his wife, each born in 1804 [and their marriage in 1823] with the names and dates of birth of ten children dated from 1824 to 1845. Mr Davis says the record was written two weeks after the birth of the youngest now Mrs Elizabeth Ann Watson. Two brothers bothers now deceased, Milton and Hendershot, received pensions as old soldiers but besides James Davis only the two sisters, who were the youngest in the family, still survive. The other sister is Mrs Eliza Jane Slayden whose husband fought in the Confederate army.

Notes
a. Note:   Family legends held that the the father of Milton Reese Davis was Harry Davis. This is dismissed by the 1907 article concerning James Davis age as relating to his civil war pension.
There is a Henry Davis born 1804 who is the son of Henry Davis Sr. and Fanny Randall. While the informaiton we have identifed make this our only possible connection, thus far we are unable to either prove or disprove that Henry Davis, the father of Milton Reese Davis, was the son of Henry and Fanny.
