Title: Obituary: George Whelpton (extract)
Publication: The Eastbourne Gazette, Eastbourne - 26 March 1873
Text: ".......St Saviours Church, first founded by him, then obtainingliberal response from others towards its completion, will remain forgenerations to come, a proof of his 'zeal for the House of God' and ofhis large hearted desire to forward the interests of his fellowchurchmen. We believe that we are correct in saying that Eastbournewas chosen by him on account of its being near to his own place ofresidence, and therefore also with a view to himself seeing andfostering the work which would thus be begun. It is, in that case, amatter of great regret that he subsequently found himself unable tofollow up the first gift by personal presence and interest in workwhich has since gathered round the new church......"
