Note: county. It was named by Jacob Adamson, who was one of five truseteesof incorporation. Joacob was from Tennessee and an admirier of generalJackson and insisted that the town be named Jacksonville in honor ofthe general. But when a post office was about to be established, itwas found out that there already was a jacksonville post office inMissouri. therefore, they had to change the name and changed it to Newmarket. It waould be a good guess that Jacob named it after newemarket Tennessee, where the adamsons lived before they moved toMissouri. During the California gold rush, Jacob Adamson and his son-in-law,William Borden, decided to go to California to get rich. They left ina covered wagon and it took them three months to make the trip. Theywere in California two years and like many others, didn't find theirfortune. They stated back home on a sailing boat with about 200 othermen and their provisions. the captain of the vessel became drunk onthe trip back, and the ship was carried off in a calm to southamerica. They were on the water 74 days without seeing land. they hadeathen all their food, and the only thng they could do was to eat themules and hard tack to stay alive. after these were gone, they talkedof casting lots and eating one of the men. William boren told them hewould shoot it out with them before he would be eaten. finally alittle breeze came up and they were able to sail the ship to land, saving themselves from starvation or from canibalism.
