With this family we can trace them back to about 1700 in Shetland. We have David either born or baptised 08/08/1828 at Greenfield, Skaw, Unst. You will not find a birth certificate for David as compulsory registration of births, deaths & marriages only started in 1855 - before that it was just notes by the minister in the church - not always reliable! We do have a note of Gilbert Spence Nicolson's birth place given as Shetland in the registry of deaths in Victoria in 1865 - he was born 1832. Some of the family moved to the north of England but I do not have any modern names listed so far. I hope this answers some of your questions? I did not read my records correctly! The David Nicolson I am interested in certainly died in Australia and is my grand father. According to the records his parents were Thomas Nicolson and his mother Margaret Gray (David's wedding cert). I cannot find any records for Gilbert though in Scotland, other than the 1841 census. However I am having trouble finding David's birth certificate with Thomas and Margaret on it. I have found a Thomas Nicolson and Margaret Scott about the same era,bu that is far as I have got? I cannot find any records about Gilbert either. Can you please help? cheers Larry Wust From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: RE: research of Nicolson family another reply Date: Mon, 28 Oct 2013 21:29:31 +0000 I have just had a very quick look at our database of Shetland families & I'm sorry to disappoint you but the David Nicolson you think is your great-grandfather died in Unst -lost at sea, leaving wife & family. I have found another David though, born 08/08/1829 in Unst, father Thomas Nicolson & mother Margaret Gray. All this family left Unst & we do have a note that David's brother Gilbert died in Victoria. They appear in the Unst 1841 census but not thereafter. Could this be your family? It sounds more hopeful! Let me know what you think & how far you have got with your AUS records, Yours Elizabeth Angus From: Larry Wust <[email protected]> Sent: 28 October 2013 03:10 To: Secretary Subject: research of Nicolson family hello, I am currently researching my great grandfather's family (on my mother's side). My great grandfather David Nicolson emigrated to Australia from the Shetland Isles in the 1850's. So far I have traced his parents Robert Nicolson and Bruce Gray and (I think) their parents William Nicolson,Elizabeth Nisbet and Andrew Gray/Ursula Bruce. I am having trouble verifying all of this and am wondering if you could help me further in my search. All I have so far is David Nicolson born 1831 in Unst Robert Nicolson born Unst 1792 ;died 1862 Unst and married Bruce Gray 1813 in Burrafirth. His parents being William Nicolson and Elizabeth Nisbet Bruce Gray born 1795 Unst;died 1862 Unst. Her parents being Andrew Gray and Ursula Bruce. I am fairly confident David Nicolson's records are correct but from then on,I'm not 100% sure! Would you please be able to help me further in my research? regards Larry Wust Re: David Nicolson, born in Unst around 1830 & emigrated to Australia in the 1850's RxCairns (View posts) Posted: 18 Apr 2014 11:25AM Classification: Biography Surnames: NICOLSON, GRAY, MURRAY Scotlands People shows that Thomas Nicolson and Margaret Gray married in 1827:in Unst: 01/02/1827 NICOLSON THOMAS MARGARET GRAY/ M UNST /SHETLAND 011/00 0020 0120 Births include: William Nicolson, 01/01/1827 Unst, parents Thomas Nicolson and Margaret Gray David Nicolson, 27/08/1829 Unst, parents Thomas Nicolson John Nicolson, 01/01/1833 Unst, parents Thomas Nicolson Margaret Ursula Nicolson, 25/10/1835 Unst, parents Thomas Nicolson and Margt Gray Robert Bruce Nicolson, 10/08/1838 Unst, parents Thomas Nicolson Thomas Cameron Nicolson, 29/07/1840 Unst, parents Thomas Nicolson Anne Cameron Nicolson, 05/07/1842 Unst, parents Thomas Nicolson A possible match in the 1841 Scotland census: Name: Thomas Nicolson Age: 40 Estimated birth year: abt 1801 Where born: Orkney and Shetland, Scotland Civil Parish: Unst County: Orkney and Shetland Address: Voesgarth Occupation: Mer S Household Members: Name Age Thomas Nicolson 40 Margaret Nicolson 35 William Nicolson 13 David Nicolson 11 Gilbert Nicolson 9 John Nicolson 7 Ursula Nicolson 5 Robert Nicolson 3 Thomas Nicolson 1 Thomas may have died before 1851, as Margaret is the head of household, living at Lerwick, on Post Office Close, with children John, Ursula, Thomas and Ann, in the 1851 Scotland census. . Voesgarth seems to be tiny - see http://www.britishplacenames.co.uk/hp6108-voesgarth-shetland... http://pa.shetland.gov.uk/online-applications/propertyDetail... Tracing the family, it looks as if William Nicolson born 1827 Unst became a Congregationalist Minister. In the 1901 Scotland census, he is living at 153 Dalkeith Road in Edinburgh with his wife Mary M., born c 1840 in England, and his sister Margaret Ursula Nicolson born 1840 Unst. The household includes William and Mary M. Nicolson's daughter, Winifred U. Nicolson, who was born 1882 in Russia. This seems to be: Name: Winifred Ursula Rev Nicolson Event Type: Baptism Christening Date: 12 May 1881 Christening Place: St Petersburg, Russia Father's Name: William Rev Nicolson Mother's Name: Mary (England and Wales, Non-Conformist Record Indexes, in Family Search) Searching for other births to William and Mary Nicolson in Russia brings up this record, which gives Mary's maiden name as Murray: Name: William Lindsay Alexander Nicolson Event Type: Baptism Christening Date: 24 Mar 1875 Christening Place: St Petersburg, Russia Father's Name: William Nicolson Mother's Name: Mary Murray (England and Wales, Non-Conformist Record Indexes, in Family Search) And also this record: Name: George Bell Nicolson Event Type: Baptism Christening Date: 25 Nov 1873 Christening Place: St Petersburg, Russia Father's Name: William Nicolson Mother's Name: Mary (England and Wales, Non-Conformist Record Indexes, in Family Search) It seems that Rev. Nicolson was serving in Amble, Northumberland, England, before he was posted as a missionary to St. Petersburg about 1869. I hope some of this information is useful to you. kind regards, Rosemary |
