Stopped working on birth of first child and did not take up employment until 1966 in Aden when she worked for the British Army at Fort Mobut (Middle East Land Forces HQ). Next job with the R.A.F. at Hereford in the Airmens Mess. In Germany employed in a German shoe factory for about 1 week then a cleaning supervisor in the service clubs and for two years as a cleaner in Joint H.Q Returning to Middlesbrough in 1976 she was employed by local council as a care worker until retiring on health grounds in 1994. Her health improved gradually but then she developed gallstone problems which meant several operations and the removal of the gallbladder. In 2009 her health gradually declined but she never complained just gradually reducing her trips out. On the night of 23rd/24th January 2010 she collapsed and the ambulance was called just after midnight. Rushed into hospital where she was resuscitated and placed in intensive care for a week followed by 2 weeks high dependency and a further week on a cardiology ward for observation and convalescence. Discharged on the 25th February she came home. Over the next 3 weeks she continued to improve and on Monday 8th March was strong enough to hold her latest great granddaughter Harriet. However on the 14th she started to complain of stomach pains but would not go to the doctors putting the pain down to side effects of her medication. On Wednesday a short trip to Sunderland to see granddaughter Christina and her children placed a big strain on her. That night she never slept. Went to the doctors on the 18th for a checkup. By 7.30pm she was in hospital acute assessment ward for observation. At about 10.30am on the 19th March she had a massive heart attack from which she never recovered. She died just after midday at 12.45pm
