Note: Earliest known job was as a lorry driver for National Benzole, driving petrol tankers. During 1939-45 war petrol companies were nationalised and called the Petroleum Board. During this period he delivered petrol to to airfields in the North Yorkshire area and to the few small garages that remained open he also delivered tractor fuel to farms and was thus able to supplement the family rations with various foodstuffs like rabbits and vegetables. After the war, carried on driving tankers, I can remember him having to go to London to bring back a tanker that carried 3600 gallons, this was the largest tanker at that time in the North East of England. In 1955 left National Benzole to work for I.C.I. at Wilton, driving a variety of vehicles, including a dustcart. It was whilst driving this latter vehicle that he was involved in an accident which finished his driving career (a car ran into him while he was checking the rear of the lorry). He then went to work for British Steel as an amenities attendant Lived at 22 Horsefield Street Middlesbrough with his family until 1951 when they moved to 22 Spencerfiled Crescent, Thorntree, Middlesbrough Notes by son Keith
