Notes
a. Note:   Immigrated to the United States in 1882. Fredric was Naturalized in 1903. Schlarpe, Uslar, Germany/Lower Saxony Story per Doug Kretzer, g-grandson of Fred. "Fred C. Kretzer, arrived in U.S. aboard SS American, July 27, 1882 with first wife Ureka Winkle Kretzer and 3 children, Frederick, Augusta, and Dorothea. His wife died a few years later and in time he decided he could not raise kids by himself. He had heard that Minnie Dheel was working for a family near Hanging Rock, Ohio and remembered her from her working for the Kretzer family in Germany. He went to the home where she was working as a maid. She saw him coming up the approach to the house and immediately said to her employer "I know that man from the other country." When Fred knocked at the door and greeted Minnie, he explained about needing a wife and asked her to marry him. She looked at the lady she worked for and asked what to do. The lady essentially told her to go for it. The rest is history." Family history says that Fredrick Carl served with German Army during the Franco-Prussian War. That war occurred from 1870-1871. A family photo, that looks to be of a painting shows a man in uniform on a calvary horse holding a sword. The caption says "Carl or Earl Kretzer" Family history also says he served with the 13th Dragoons, Hanover. A dragoon is a type calvary soldier. There is dispute about when Fred was born. The 1900, 1910, & 1920 census all list his age, ending in 7. Since he was born late in the year, and the census asks you age on you last birthday, that means he probably born in a year ending in 2. In this case 1852. His death certificate lists his year as 1851 or , maybe it is 1852. It is hard to tell. It could even be 1857. I am comfortable with the three consecutive census' and then at least the possible confirmation by the death certificate. Fred has had at least three markers on his grave. The first was just a stone. The second, was wooden and had his birthdate as 12/1851. The 1900 census asks for the month an year of birth. It lists Dec 1852. But, his death certificate lists the month as November. Again, I am comfortable going with the census, because of the consistency, through the three decades. That leaves only the day. Only one record to date has given a date. That was his death certificate, and it lists it as the 26th. So putting that all together, we have Dec 26, 1852. Found in Fred's bible where four documents; A Marriage Certificate between him and Minnie Deal, a handwritten list of his children with their birthdates, a handwritten list of marriages, and a handwritten list of deaths. All of these will be used as sources under the heading "Family Bible-Fred Kretzer"
