Was respected by peers in political thinking.
Tended to put all but oldest son out to work for others; so only one had good education. Did not spare the road. Resented by children. Wife long-suffering. Daughter acknowledged he loved them; however was hard on children and farm animals.
Wondered why his children did not seem to care for the books of his extended relative, Charles Major (Avery family). His daughter, Carol, when asked if something good could be said of him, stated: "He could plow a straighter furrow than the other farmers around."
Tall; dark haired and wore goatee at time of first wife's death. Later had a shock of white hair and handsome. Died following series of strokes.
