Notes
a. Note:   Cumberland County, VA was made from Goochland County in 1748; Goochland County was taken from Henrico County in 1728. William Arnold, Sr. who died in Cumberland County in 1774, was in Goochland County before Cumberland County was formed. 1. Cumberland Co. WB 2, p. 157 9/16/1774 Proved 11/28/1774 Will of William Arnold To son Moses: 200 acres plantation and land whereon he and I now lives To son Thomas: 100 acres plantation and land where he now lives To my son Moses Arnold one large pewter dish and one large pewter bason. To son Henry: one cow To wife, Elizabeth: the rest and after her death to children Executors: Moses, John, and Thomas Arnold Wit: Adcock Hobson, Benjamin Sims, John Bowler Dated: 9/16/1774 Proved: 11/28/1774 Cumberland Co. WB 2, p. 157-158 2. From "A Georgia Heritage", p. 4 Moses Arnold received 100 acres of land in Cumberland Co. from his father's estate probably in 1775. He and wife, Elizabeth, then granted the 100 acres on "both sides of Tanwallet Creek" to Robert Clopton. DB 5, p. 441. . . . Judgement was rendered against William Arnold Jr. of Cumberland Co., in favor of John Tabb of Amelia County (Prince Edward Co. Virginia Records at Large, District Court, 1789-1792). He name last appears in Cumberland Co. in October 1795.. . although it is doubtful he resided in Cumberland County at that time. He left his will in Halifax County in 1801, which he signed by mark as William Arnold, Sr. . . He and his wife may have had several children in addition to the son shown below. 2. From "A Georgia Heritage", p. 1 and 2 William also had a son John Arnold - "He did not leave his son John Arnold anything because he was already well established by that time in neighboring Prince Edward Co. The estate appraisement was returned and recorded on 23 January 1775, as documented in Order Book, 1774-1778, Cumberland County, page 311. This appraisement is shown in Cumberland Co. WB 2, p. 164-165, valued at 853 pounds, 18 shillings, and 6 pence. The inventory included 14 slaves, 33 hogs, 19 cattle, 13 sheep, a white mare, a black mare, a roan mare, miscellaneous tools and household items, and cash due the estate. An Indenture of Promisement was recorded on 27 May 1776 between Moses Arnold and Thomas and Mary Arnold, by which Mary relinquished her right to dower in the estate. A second Indenture of Promisement was recorded, same date, between Moses Arnold and his wife Elizabeth, in which she also relinquished her right to dower in the estate. There were several other legal documents recorded between 1778 and 1784, involving various aspects of William Arnold's will and distributions. Additional information on "William Arnold and his descendants may be found in "Arnold Family Association of the South," particularly Volume VI I, January 1977. It is believed their marriage may have resulted in several daughters in addition to the five sons shown...their names are not known. There is speculation that one or more of the daughters may have married in to the Davenport family, or one of several other closely aligned families. William Arnold was a planter of Guinea Creek when that section of Virginia was part of Goochland. He received a grant of 400 acres from William Gooch on 17 March 1736 (Land Patent Book 17). The land lay on both sides of Tan Wallet Run. William Arnold's land also bordered property held by Edmund Hodges and Paul Pig. Others who received patents for land that adjoined his property were James Allen, John Chaffin and James Terry. William Arnold and his wife Elizabeth witnessed "William Bostick's" Will in Goochland on 30 December 1739 (Goochland Deed Book 3, p. 311). In the 16 June 17 40 deposition of the above (Deed Book 3, page 311), he gave his age as " 40 years or thereabouts", fixing his date of birth at circa 1700. It has been speculated that Elizabeth may have been a Bostick before her marriage to William Arnold. On 14 September 1741, William Arnold was again described as one of the land holders bounding the Bostick property (Deed Book 3, pages 415 a nd 477). He was still in Goochland in 1747. A Thomas Arnold "and Lucy" were also shown on this list. This Thomas Arnold may have been a brother, or possibly William Arnold's father, but not a son. William Arnold was granted additional land in Goochland in 1748 by Henry Parrish and his wife (Deed Book 5, p. 411). Cumberland County, Virginia, was created from Goochland in 1748. It has been assumed by the compiler that the several Cumberland County court records that follow are those of Willam Arnold, although there is a possibility that several may, instead, relate to his son, William Arnold, Jr. (S ee Book, p.1) 3. New Dictionary of American Family Names by Elsdon C. Smith, Harper & Ro wk publishers, New York, Evanston, San Francisco, London, copyright 1956 a nd 1973. P. 11 - ARNOLD, ARNOLDE (English) - descendants of Arnold (eagle, rule); one who came from Arnold (corner frequented by eagles), in Nottinghamshire. 4. The first authentic record is found to appear in GOOCHLAND CO. (Will dated 1774. Prob. 28 Nov. 1774) in that WILLIAM ARNOLD and his wife, ELIZAB ETH, made deposition proving the will of Wm. BOSTICK, while also we find that he was about this time a planter in what is now Cumberland Co. prior to 1748 when that section was part of Goochland. 6.
