Note: There is mention March 1760 Court in Cumberland Co., VA records of JOHN ARNOLD having a negro girl, Tabby, who was judged to be 14 years old (Cumberland Co. Order Book 1758-1762, p. 167). In May 1762 records, JOHN ARNOLD was not shown as an inhabitant of Cumberland Co. It is believed he was the JOHN ARNOLD who had moved to Prince Edward, the first of the ARNOLD name to appear in Prince Edward County records. IN 1763, he bought 200 acres of land on the upper side of Vaughn's Creek from John Green for 30 pounds, recorded 21 February 1763 (Prince Edward County Deed Book 2, p. 142). On 16 April 1787, John ARNOLD purchased 250 acres on the Appomattox River from William Anglea for 13,000 pounds of tobacco (PE Coun ty DB 7, p. 276). Also, in 1791, he purchased 200 acres on Vaughan's Creek from Massanello Womack for 100 pounds, recorded 19 December 1791 ( DB 9, p. 165). It was described as "being more or less a part of the tra ct of 500 acres that Jacob Garriott formerly lived at". On July 21 1794, JOHN ARNOLD as shown as grantee for 3 additional land transfers, each involving taxes owed by the estate of John BOSTICK. He received 20 acres for 39 pounds, and six pence; 40 acres for 4 pounds, 2 shillings, and 8 pence and 40 acres for 4 pounds, 2 shillings, and 5 pence ( DB 10, p. 162, 173, 174, respectively). He granted 34 acres on Vaughn's Creek to Thomas C. MARTIN on 20 September 1802 for $100 (DB 12, p. 387), and on 18 June 1804 granted 200 acres on Vaughn's Creek to James Davenport for $1000 (DB 13, p. 186). The latter sale was the 200 acres he had purchased from Massasnello Womack in 1791. He remained in Prince Edward County until his death, which was before 20 November 1815. His will was proved in Prince Edward County on that date. It had been signed 5 February 1 809 (WB 5, p. 39). His wife Sarah was named executrix in his will, with his son David Arnold and son in law Davis Hill executors. 1.
