Note:   LABEL2:INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEER LABEL3:METHODIST LABEL5:VETERAN US NAVY KOREAN WAR Howard Emmett Cochran ‘46 Commander Howard Emmett Cochran, USNR (Ret.) died on 24 June 2012 at Meadowlands Assisted Living, O’Fallon, MO. Howard was born 21 August 1922 in Greenfield, IL. He graduated from Alton High School and attended Shurtleff College for two years in Alton, IL before he received his appointment to the USNA from Illinois. Upon graduation with the class of 1946 (June 1945 early graduation due to WWII), he reported to the Philadelphia Naval Yard and the USS Huntington (CL-107) serving as F Division Officer. In 1947 he resigned his commission and accepted a Reserve commission. Howard attended the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana and graduated with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He was employed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio until August 1951 when he was recalled to active duty and reported to the USS Manchester (CL-83) in Long Beach, CA. In June 1952, he was assigned as Aide and Flag Lieutenant to Rear Admiral Harry Sanders aboard the USS St. Paul (CA-73). Howard prepared the final round fired from sea during the Korean conflict on 27 July 1953. The shell was signed by Rear Admiral Harry Sanders. Returning to civilian status in November 1953, he served in Naval Reserve Unit NRR 6-3 until retirement in August 1982 with 40 years of service. Howard was employed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, TN from 1954-1982 as an electrical engineer in the Instrumentation and Controls Division. He was an accomplished artist and member of the Tennessee Watercolor Society. He was also known for his wood and stone carvings. He was a Boy Scouts of America scoutmaster for over 20 years. Howard played the piano, clarinet, harmonica, recorder, and mandolin. He held an Amateur Radio License (early, W9IMW and later, K4PDH) for over 74 years. He was a member of the Kingston United Methodist Church, Kingston, TN for 54 years. Howard is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty, St. Charles, MO; son, Curt (Pam), Dumfries, VA; son, Scott (Janet), St. Charles, MO; grandchildren, Alisha (Chris) Massengill, Kingston, TN, Amanda (Wayne) Gamble, and Levi Cochran, Harriman, TN, Emily Cochran of Herndon, VA; great-grandchildren, Hannah Massengill, Carter Massengill, and Matthew Gamble; brother, Norman, Tucson, AZ; several nieces and nephews. Cochran (née: Hovey); son of the late Cody Lee and Pauline E. Cochran; father of Curt (Pam) Cochran and Scott Cochran; grandfather of Alisha, Amanda, Levi, and Emily; great-grandfather of Hannah, Carter, and Matthew; and brother of Norman Cochran. He is preceded in death by a sister, Unice Maxine Allen; brother-in-law, Dr. Robert Allen; and sister-in-law, Reba Cochran.
