Notes
a. Note:   Emma Jane was killed leaving her school bus with her brothers, Bill and Grig. As she left the bus in front of her brothers, a truck passed the bus and overran her. Bill Michael said that he saw the accident as he was just behind her. He was nine at the time and told his niece, Carolyn Michael Hinze, that he really didn't realize that his sister was dead, but knew something was really wrong and his mother should come. He ran home to get her. ________________ From a "typed" letter (probably from the teacher) signed by Emma Dear Mother and Daddy, We are doing many nice things at school. I am in the second grade. Each morning, we salute the flag and sing America. Then we have inspection to see who has clean teeth, face, hands, nails and hair nicely brushed. We learn what we should eat, and how much we should sleep. We also tell stories about little boys and girls who do these things. We read and tell about polite little girls and boys, too, who are always on time, truthful, busy, and kind to everyone. Our safety stories, games and pictures are nice. They teach us how to cross the streets and play, so that we will not get hurt. We try to take good care of our books, too. In school, I have number work, reading, music, phonics, spelling, writing, language, geography, history and nature study stories, and art each day. We read many different readers and story books. The work we do in phonics helps us to pronounce our words. We write our spelling lessons. In number work, we learn our addition and subtraction combinations, to read and write numbers to one thousand. We learn about measures, how to tell time and add money, and so many things. We try to have nice papers when we write our arithmetic. We learn how to write papers in language with headings and margins. We learn when to use capital letters and some of the punctuation marks. We also learn to write short stories of a few sentences. We try to use words correctly. We make sentences, study pictures, and poems. We have a nice time in Physical Education. We play singing games, tag games, story games, and run relay races, do stunts, and take exercises. We like for the music teacher to come, and we like to sing. At our school cafeteria, you can buy soup, vegetables, sandwiches, salads, desserts, and milk for five cents each. We would like to have you come and visit our school and come to our assemblies. Good-bye, ss/ Emma
