a. Note:   (P 915) John Miller Section 13, Trowbridge Township, Allegan County is the present home ofour subject. He was born in the Grand Duchy of Hesse, Germany, in 1826,and is the son of Nicholas and Anna (Killer) Miller. The parents came toAmerica about 1852, where the father died in 1860; the mother survived anumber of years and passed away in 1875.* John Miller was the eldest member of his parents' family of eightchildren. He remained in Germany until nineteen years of age, being givenan excellent education in the model schools (P 916) of that country. In1845, he came to America, and made his home for a few years in Canada.Before the Civil War, he removed to New York State. He followed the tradeof a cooper for twenty years. In 1847, Miss Catherine Killer became the wife of our subject. She wasalso a native of Germany, and by her union with Mr. Miller has became themother of five children, as follows: Conrad, who married Grace Masen, isa merchant in Kalamazoo and has three children. Kate is the wife ofCharles Wheeler, and lives in Allegan; she has four children, two of whomare married. Adeline is the wife of Charles W Marsh, and lives in Topeka,Kan.; she has one child. Mary is unmarried, and John H, who is living inCalifornia, is married and has two children. Mrs. Catherine Miller died in 1859, and our subject came to Michigan in1863 and located on his present farm, which was partially cleared. Heagain was married, in 1865, this time to Anna J Waber, a native ofBavaria, and by her became the father of two children: Anna B, who is thewife of John Dellinger, lives at White Pigeon, this state, and has onechild. Clara E is the wife of William Knobloch, and lives in Monterey;she also has one child. Our subject has one hundred and twenty acres of land, seventy of whichhe has cleared himself. He has a good residence and all the needful farmbuildings, and has planted an apple orchard of five acres, and also afive acre peach orchard. He does a general farming business, and has hisplace stocked with a good grade of horses and cattle. The family aremembers of the Lutheran Church. Mr. Miller has always been interested ineducational matters in his district, and has held the offices ofDirector, Moderator, and Assessor. His children have been given goodeducations, Mrs. Dellinger and Mrs. Marsh having been school teachers.Our subject is a Patron of Husbandry, in which order his daughters haveheld office. In politics, our subject is a Democrat, and has been DrainCommissioner and Road Overseer of his township. When first purchasing his farm in Allegan County, Mr. Miller paid $200down and went in debt for the remainder. He is doubly proud now inknowing that what he has is the result of his industry and perserverence.No one ever appeals to him in vain, for he is very liberal to all worthycharitable objects. Mr. Miller fully appreciates the value of a knowledgeof books, and has a fine library in his house. * This information is incorrect. John's mother Anna died in New York in1854 while his father Nicholas died in Michigan in 1872.
