Notes
a. Note:   m on the hill, which was difficult land, while Paul farmed the rich flat bottom land atthe foot of the hill on the north side of the road, just east of theplace. As a kids, my brother & I roamed all over the place, even got tohoe weeds in the corn a couple of times. The 80 acres seemed huge to us.(Now it's not enoudh to raise a family on, but back then threegenerations did, and faitly large families, too. At one time Paul Waberraised a lot of mint on the bottom land, running his own still. Mybrother Roger and a cousin Daniel Cronk worked there one summer, wherepart of their work was placing the mint in the huge vat (perhaps 15 feetin diameter) whose top was at ground level inside the canopy - likebuilding , then, after the steam had done its job, they pitched the hot, spent mint plants back out onto a wagon. Last time I was there, about6-7 years ago there was no mint in that area. They have recently begungrowing it in central and eastern Oregon. It takes a lot of water. Thesteamed, dead stems are spread on fields and disked in as "greenfertilizer." There is a name for the stuff, but I don't recall it.
Note:   Yes, BUT. The property was in the hands of Alma's brother, Paul. Almaand John traded places with him because, as I was told, Alma wanted tolive on "Waber Hill" again. So John MacGregor got the far
