Note: The year of birth given James are from the 1850 and 1860 census records for Montgomery County, Alabama. The settlement of his estate was was administered by his son William A. Daniel. This was in Montgomery County, Alabama in the years 1865 and 1866 with final settlement in January of 1867. In this document, the heirs in law are listed as William A. Daniel, Rebecca A. Sankey, wife of J. T. Sankey of Montgomery County, Alabama; Ann McGehee, wife of James McGehee and Margeret T. Daniel, wife of O. H. Daniel all of who live in Fayette County, Texas. The document states that William, Rebecca, and Margaret are children of James as well as and Hiers in law. Elizabeth Lockett furnished family information regarding James and his family in which William A. Daniel, was known as "Uncle Buck" and lists this James as James Cunningham Daniel who married Mary Matthews and had one son and four girls The girls are listed as Rebecca(Mrs. J. T. Sankey), Ann McGehee, Mattie Daniel, and Margeret Daniel Parks. This information was furnished by Elizabeth Lockett who lived near the town of Snowdoun, Alabama. Mrs. Lockett is the daughter of John Leonard Sankey. The Covenant Presbyterian Church is located on Hwy 331 south of Snowdoun. This church was founded in 1828 and is still active. Near this location are three private cemeteries, Sharp, Underwood, and Sankey. There are several Daniel's in the Sharp Cemetery and Rebecca Daniel(Mrs. J. T. Sankey) is buried in the Sankey Cemetery. The 1850 census of this household show James Daniel, Martha, Ann, and Margeret. There appears to be no mother present. The girls are shown to have been born in Georgia. James indicates that he was born in Virginia. Their brother William A. Daniel was born in Greene County, Ga. in 1824. On William A. Daniel's census record for 1880, the place of birth of his parents are given as Virginia. James Daniel and William D. Sankey were neighbors. William D. Sankey came from Talliaferro County, GA and settled in Montgomery County in 1839. James Daniel is known to have lived in Greene County, GA. It is likely that he moved to Montgomery County after 1836 based on his youngest child's birth year and place of birth listed on the census records. William D. Sankey's son Dr, John T. Sankey married Rebecca Daniel. William D. Sankey's wife was Margerette Daniel.---Recollections of the Early Settlers of Montgomery County and Their Families, by W. G. Robertson, 1892, pp. 110-113. The biography of Dr. John T. Sankey states that James Daniel was from Virginia and that James' wife's name was Mary . In the Genealogies of Virginia Families in the Articles regarding "Cunningham's of Cub Creek" by John Goodwin Herndon, Page 209, James Daniel is listed as the son of Hannah Cunningham and William Daniel. James, son of Wiliam Daniel, is listed as having children James who married Mary Matthews in Wilkes County, Georgia, Rebecca Daniel who married John T. Sankey, Thomas C. Daniel, Margeret Daniel who married Oscar A. Daniel and Anne Sankey Daniel who married James W. McGehee. The compiler has listed James and Thomas to the list in order of their probable birth dates. In the footnote regarding this listing, the source is given as Worth S, Ray of Austin, Texas. Mr. Ray strongly disagreed with Herndon on the Daniel Lineage. However, sources of Worth S. Ray's information were not given. In light of the information given by Mrs Lockett , the list of James Daniel's children in Herndon's work is confusing. When James died, only the daughters are shown along with William A. Daniel who is not shown on Dr. Herndon's list. On Highway 331 south of Montgomery, Alabama, near the town of Snowdoun, there is the Providence Presbyterian Church. Several members of the Sankey family still attend this church(1997) and have provided information confirming that this is the location where the Daniels lived.. The information provided by the family members indicate that the name of this James Daniel was James Cunningham Daniel and that he was the husband of Mary Mathews. This seems to follow in line with the biography of Dr. John T. Sankey as noted above although at odds with Herndon's article whose information was based on Worth S. Ray from undocumented sources. The marriage record of James Daniel and Mary Mathews in Wilkes County is in Record Book B, FO 37 which shows that the license was taken out on January 19 1824 and the marriage was performed by James Armstrong, Minster of the Gospel. The marriage was recorded in May 1826.
