Notes
a. Note:   The information on this family comes from letters written to my grandfather Timothy Kelly b. 1850. Thomas was his older brother. Thomas lived in Plymouth Pennsylvannia and moved west to Lone Pine Township in Pottowatamie Co, Ks.. His wife's name is from a letter written by Thomas' father Michael Kelly in Ireland . Her family was well known to the Kelly Family.. The graves of Thomas and his wife were in St. Joesph Cemetary near the community of Lillis in Marshall County, KS. Lone Tree Township is in Powattomie, County which was where Thomas and his family farmed. At the gravesite, it was noted that there were two stones representing young children of this family. It was noted that the name was spelled "Kelley." The 1900 census shows that two Kelly children died prior to 1900. Since four children received funds from the distribrution of Thomas's estate, then the two deceased children must have been Joesph and Neley. In May of 1910, a final accounting of his estate was made in Pottawatomie County, Ks. The court probate record shows that W. S. Leonard was the administrator of the estate. Distribution of the proceeds of a public sale went to Mrs. Thomas Kelly, Kate Kelly, Margaret Leonard, Annie Kelly, and Michael Kelly. The 1900 census record shows Thomas and his wife had been married 26 years. Both were born in Ireland and both immigrated in 1864. From family letters written by Thomas to his brother Timothy and those received from Michael the father of Thomas, we know that Thomas worked in the coal mines in Plymouth, Pa. At one time, Thomas and his wife ran a boarding house. In a letter written to his brother Timothy, Thomas complains about the harsh condiions in the coal fields and that he has decided to move to Kansas. He indicates that he will be near his uncle called Aurthur O'Keeffe. Arthur O'keeffe and his wife are buried in the same cemetary with Thomas Kelly. Arthur O'Keeffe was an uncle having married Thomas' aunt, Mary Ann Kelly. They had ten children. The family came to America in 1869. Arthur and his family which included ten children The 1900 census asks the number of children born to the woman and the answer is 6 for Thomas's wife. The census then asks the number still living and the answer is 4. Reference is made to his wife by his father Michael in Ireland in a letter dated January 4, 1874:. "Dear Thomas: We are glad to hear that you have gotten married and we send you our bessings. We are pleased that you married the daughter of Thoas Crowley a decent and honest man and himself and me are great friends. We hear that she is wise, honest and steadygirl and well educated." Michael J. Kelly, Springfield, Mo., 2006
