Notes
a. Note:   Written by her: March 10, 1970--- We came to Texas when I was 9 years old in 1895. I remember wecrossed the Mississippi River on a ferry boat and we ate lunch on theboat while crossing. We came from Alabama on a train. The first year we were here we lived on a farm near New Years Creek inWashington Co. We lived there 3 years and was sick all the time. Wehad chills, typhoid fever and about everything else there was. Inthose days, the creek over flowed every time it came a big rain. Thewhole farm would be under water. The water would come up to the edgeof the yard. The house was near the road on a high level. That keptthe water from coming into the house. It rained so hard one day, it rained down little fish. We kids hadfun trying to catch them. March 12, 1970-- We moved from there on another farm on Felder's place. MrFelder owned a gin and griss mill. My dad ran the mill and the gin.On Saturday he would grind corn to make meal for the farmers. My oldest sister married there to a Mr. Frank Dodson. They weremarried about a year and had a baby boy. She lived only 5 days anddied from blood poison. The baby lived 2 months. After my sister married I had to milk 5 cows morning and night. Inthe morning I would have to hunt up the calves down in the pasture. There was big dews and my dress wold be wet to my knees. Then I wouldgo to the field and chop cotton all day. I was always a big old overgrown country girl. When I was 15 I weighed 145. Then the shcool was only in the winter months, 3 or 4 months. Theschools were so far apart you would forget all you learned and have toback all over again. I went through fractions 5 times and quitschool when I was 15 to get married. I only went through the fifthgrade so you know I didn't know much.
