According to Deed Book No. 6, 1779-1790 Stephen Winfrey owned 106 acres of land in Cumberland County, Virginia on "Groom's Quarter" Branch west side and was bought from David and Martha Robertson 28 March 1785 for 95 pounds, 8 shillings and adjourned John Meador, John Mintor, Alexander Trent, Joseph H. Jenkins and William Winfree (William Winfree was Stephens' brother). When Richard was 12 years old his parents sold the land on which they were residing in 1800 (Deed Book 8, 1797-1801) and migrated to Franklin County, Virginia. They were listed on the 1810 census of Franklin County. (**) According to Franklin County Deed Book 9 - page 317-318, Darcus and Richard bought 190 acres of land for $100.00 from his parents, which were located on the waters of Otter Creek on 18 Dec 1820. They resided there with their children for the next twenty years, where Richard engaged in farming until his death in 1840. A List of taxable property within the district of Robert Hairston Commissioner in the County of Franklin, for the year 1830, Richard Winfrey owned three horses, taxed at 24 cents. (No Census Information for 1830) Darcus and Richard were still living on Otter Creek in Franklin County at the time of his death at age 51 in 1840. He died without leaving a will. His estate sale was held 23 March 1840 by Issac Huff. (Franklin County Will Book 5, page 277) Darcus bought from her husband's estate: one Flax Wheel $2.13 1\2, one Feather Bed and Furniture $5.00, one Roan Horse $15.00 and one Cow $13.00. Eileen is the great granddaughter of Peter Bailey Winfrey and the daughter of Fred Ulysses Winfrey and Lena Sara Schafield of Carroll County, Mo.
