Brammer 65 Darks Bramer 73 Peter est 17 Petter Winfrey 35 Sarah M. 11 Charles W. 8 Note: Darcus is living next to Peter and Charles in 1860 census. Research By: Patricia Winfrey Lovelace Darcus was the daughter of Charles Rakes, Sr. and Jane Hubbard, born 24 November 1796 in Franklin County, Virginia. Darcus lived in Patrick County until her marriage to Richard Renard Winfrey of Franklin County, Va., on 8 June 1812, surety Brice Edwards. Charles Rakes, Sr. gave his permission for her marriage on 6 June 1812. If she needed her father's permission for her to marry, we know she was under the age of twenty one, she was probably about 16 years old at the time of her marriage. Her age has been a mystery to all that have researched her. She either had a hard time keeping up with her age or enjoyed keeping everyone guessing. Each ten year period her age has varied five to ten years to the plus or minus. Her birth date given above was extracted from the records of Eileen Adams, Kansas City Winfrey family researcher. After much adding and subtracting, 1796 seems to be the correct year. The 1840 Franklin County Census shows that Darcus was living in the household of her son Stephen Winfrey, on Runnett Bag Creek. Darcus married John Brammer, Sr. three years after Richard's death, in Patrick Co. VA. They were married 17 Sept 1843, (Patrick Co. Bond 15 Sept 1843, surety, John Brammer) by Michael Howry, Minister of the Gospel. John Brammer only lived three years after their marriage. He died 14 Sept 1846 and on the 27 March 1847 Darcus gave up her dower right to John Brammer's estate. (Patrick Co. Deed Book 12, Page 565) After John Brammer died she moved to Mercer CO with Her son Peter, in 1850 Census as Winphey and living near, her sis. Mifflin & Eure Weeks. She received land from Brammer, War of 1812 in MO and Moved there where she died. According to the 1850 Census of Mercer County, Va., Darcus was living in Mercer County near her son Burwell Winfrey and his wife Orina, with her 17 year old son, Peter Bailey Winfrey. Her estimated age at this time is 45 years old. It appears that her family began to migrate west from Franklin Co. about 1841. We know that Burwell and his family arrived in Mercer County, Va. in the spring of 1846. Darcus, Peter and her brother-in-law James Brammer probably arrived at the same time. The 1850 census records show Burwell in household #165, Darcus and Peter in #161. We believe her son Charles was the first to leave Franklin Co., shortly after his father's death in 1840, his age being about 23 at that time. We know that he married first Marietta Rogers (Deed Book "E" Carroll Co. Missouri, Page 53) Extracted from the research of Eileen Adams great-granddaughter of Peter Bailey Winfrey, DeWitt, Missouri) and secondly he married Lavina Hall on 6 Oct 1848, Greentop, Carroll Co. Mo. Her son Stephen "Steve" did not leave Franklin County, Virginia until some time before 1860. Steve age 48 and Agnes "Aggie" age 43 appeared on the 1860 census of that County. In 1870 they are in Carroll County, Grandriver Township, Mo. He died there sometime after 1870 and before 1880. He was a farmer and a maker of baskets according to Eileen Adams. Richard R. Jr. also migrated to Carroll County, according to Eileen Adams' records, he died there 1 Jan 1881 and is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, DeWitt, Mo. No other information is available for him. On October 8, 1851, Darcus (Winfrey) Brammer of Mercer County, Virginia, age 61 years, applied for Bounty Land Warrant 99,809, Act of 1855 for Veterans of the War of 1812, allowing 160 acres of land. Darcus swears she is the widow of John Brammer, deceased Pvt. Capt William Linn's Co. 7th Va. Regt., Col. David Saunders, commander. John Brammer was drafted in Patrick Co., VA, December 31, 1814 served until February 2, 1815, he was discharged at Fort Barbour, Virginia. Darcus married John Brammer in Franklin Co., VA., 15 Sept 1843 by Michael Howry, minister, and her name before her marriage was Darcus Winfrey. Her husband died in Patrick Co., Va. November 14, 1846. Burwell Winfrey , Alexander Mahood, Witnesses. Darcus and her son Peter Bailey Winfrey apparently headed west shortly after this petition was filed. We know they arrived some time before 1857. Peter married Ann Hall 18 March 1857. On May 2, 1860, Darcus goes to court in Carroll Co. Mo. swears at age 65 she has never received bounty land warrant as the widow of John Brammer. Harry Lanbaugh and Peter B. Winfrey, witnessed. She eventually received 160 acres as a bounty of John's war service. The location of this land in Carroll Co. according to the DeWitt 1876 plat of Township 53 North (Grandriver) Range 21 West was section 26. According to Carroll County Deed Book "Y" page 367, Darcus sold forty seven acres of the North East portion on the North West quarter and the upper fourth of the South East fourth of the North quarter of section twenty six to Barry W. Jones and his wife Sarah W. Jones for the sum of $640.75 on 28 May 1867. Records show she sold this land 10 October 1861. On 9 October 1867 she sold the North East quarter of the North West quarter and one fourth of the South East quarter section 26 to George Holliday for the sum of $600.00 (109.75 acres). According to the Carroll County Missouri 1860 Census, page 33, taken by Henry B. Roy 15 June 1860, Grandriver Township, Post Office DeWitt, Darcus was living alone and was a farmer, age 65, living in close proximity to her sons Peter and Stephen. Her real estate was worth $600.00 and her personal worth was $624.00, her birthplace was Virginia. The 1870 Carroll Co. Census shows Darcus, age 73, living with Peter and his two children, Sarah and Charles W., keeping house. Peter's wife Ann died in November of 1862. No financial worth is recorded for Darcus, however Peter's real estate was worth $3,500.00 and his personal worth was $500.00. There was no finance worth recorded for him in the 1860 Carroll Co. Census. Her son Stephen and his wife Agnes, their four children, George, Peter, Laticia, and Eliza are still living near by. Darcus is not reported in the Carroll County 1880 census, she must have died after the 1870 census was taken, she would probably have been about 74 years old at that time. Peter is registered as widowed, age 45 and a farmer. Living with him was his 18 year old son Charles W., single, his niece Nancy Booth age 30, widow (the daughter of Peter's brother Steve Winfrey and Agnes Carter. Nancy married Harvey Booth in Franklin Co., Va., 4 July 1853, her age was listed as 20 at the time of their marriage, she would have been age 46 not 30 in 1880), Nancy's son Harvey Booth, age 16 and James Ross, age 28, listed as kin. (Note) Birth dates for the children of Darcus and Richard were extracted from the 1973 research records of Eileen Adams, Kansas City Winfrey Family researcher. Eileen is the great granddaughter of Peter Bailey Winfrey and the daughter of Fred Ulysses Winfrey and Lena Sara Schafield of Carroll County, Mo.
