Notes
a. Note:   H00088
Note:   By Sarahjane Doyle Nelson Swarstad James M. Hall, a framer by trade, the father of Alexander Hall, was born in Giles Co., Va. near Pearisburg, Va., the county seat , about 30 Dec 1834. (Note Elke A. Hall has him born 19 Feb 1834) His parents were James and Mary Hall. About the age of 20 he married Nancy White, the daughter of Acles and Elizabeth White, on 19 Sep, 1855. They had three children, Alexander, the oldest, born in Giles Co., Va. and twins James and John were born near Pulaski, Va. Nancy died young, possibly at the birth of the twins in 1858. On 6 October 1859 he married Louisa Mowles, she was born in Botetourt Co., Va. James and Louisa married in Mercer Co., Va. , which is now W.Va. but moved very soon after thier marriage to Tazewell Co.,Va. Maiden Springs District. The 1860 Census taken in March of that year places them there. ( James and Louisa are in the 1860 Tazewell Co. Census, Maiden Springs district. James, a blacksmith, was 25 years old, Louisa, his wife, was 24. Their children Alexander, 3, John D., 2, and James H., 2, lived in their household. William Mowles, 24, a farm laborer, also lived with them. ) As yet, I'm not sure where the family was in 1870 -- I believe they may have been in Grayson Co., Va. The marriage records of Tazewell Co., Va.. of Gus Hall says his parents were James & Louisa Hall and that he was born in Grayson Co.,Va. With the Civil War in 1863, Military records show James M. Hall a private in two different regiments, at different times, one in Mercer Co., Va. and one from Tazewell Co., Va.. In the 1880 Census of Tazewell Co., Va.. we find Alexander Hall, a blacksmith, as head of the household. Living with him are, Erastus a brother and blacksmith, Louisa his stepmother, and a nephew William Manse ( or Mowles), 4 years old. Apparently, there was a sister, (Ollie) possibly born in Grayson Co., Va or in Ashe, Co., N.C. durning those missing 20 years. How long James M. Hall lived after 1867 when Gus was borned is unknown at this time. { ( ) by Wade.}
