Note:   Montgomery Co, VA Census 1860 1880 Shawsville Christiansburg Magistrate page (739) 181 page 29 (ref # 362) Dist 50 Male Charles W. 3 ---------- Male John W. 5 ----------- Male William F. 7 ----------- Male, John B. 31 John B. 52 Female Mary E. 36 Mary age 54 Female Margaret J. 9 ------------ Female Mary S. 2 ------------ Female Christine A. 14. Lois A. Henson, THE FAMILY JEWELS; ; Advocate Press, Franklin Springs, GA, 1979; p 32; Roanoke Public Library, Roanoke VA. Since Mary and Martha Jewell were sisters and John B. and James A. Doyle were brothers, their children were double first cousins. John B. was a nice looking man, black hair and brown eyes. He joined the Civil War late 1861, when William F. was about 9 years old and held the rank of Captain. They were then living in George's Run in Montgomery Co. (You can get there by going out Mt. Pleasant Rd, turning left down hill before reaching Mt. Pleasant Church). At that time there was a school house on George's Run. It is most likely that Mary taught at this school. John contracted a lingering diarrhea while in the CSA which caused his death. Many soldiers contracted this disease. On 13 Oct 1870, 5 years after the war, John petitioned Montgomery Co. Circuit Court under the "Homestead Act" for a piece of land in George's Run which contained 104 acres belonging to Claiborne McDaniel. (This "Act" allowed people to purchase land through the court that was delinguent in taxes.) He declared his wealth to be: Two 2-yr old cattle worth $50, a milk cow $25, 4 hogs $28, 2 calves $4, 1 cupboard $2, Tablewear $10, 2 plows and 1 hoe $3.50, and about 1500 pounds of tobacco. "All I have this year worth about $105 about 75 bushels of corn, all I raised this year worth about $37.50. One debt owed me by David Jewell $10.00." (David Jewell was his brother-n-law) The judge granted his request. It was an acceptable practice for the state to pick up tax delinquent property and reissue it under the "Homestead Act". It was a way for the state to obtain tax monies. Note By Mike Bowder: John B. Doyle and his brother, James A. Doyle, enlisted as privates in Capt. J. R. Francis' Company of Virginia Volunteers (Company D 63 VA Infantry) on 15 April 1862 at Camp Narrows, Peterstown, Monroe Co, (W)VA for a period of 3 years (John was 35, James was 42 according to the records). Company D was comprised of men primarily from Montgomery County. John was present for Company Muster Roll at Abingdon, VA on 24 May 1862, but spent a good deal of his enlistment on sick leave at the Montgomery Springs Hospital near his home. He was not a captain as is sometimes stated. (Based on data from Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Virginia available on microfilm at Newman Library, Virginia Tech). On 13 Oct 1870, John filed a Homestead Deed (also known as a Homestead Exemption deed persuant to Article XI of the Constitution of Virginia and recorded in Montgomery Co, VA Deed Book S:246). This particular type of deed allowed a person to claim certain types of property to be free from seizure in the event of debt or tax delinquincy. Included in the schedule of property were a 104 acre tract of land on Georges Run valued at $700 and 1500 lbs. of tobacco valued at $105. John's date of death is unknown (the last census listing for him was 1880), but according to Doctor Elmer Dudley, in a letter written to my mother's cousin in 1982 (and now commonly cited as the ''Doc Dudley letter'' ), he and his wife, Mary Ellen Jewell Doyle are buried in the Mt. Pleasant Church cemetery. Also according to the ''Doc Dudley letter'', Jesse Doyle Craig, granddaughter of John B. Doyle, said John died at the home of his daughter, Christine Ann Doyle Farley (aka Sis Farley). Jesse's sister, Mary Jane Doyle Ratliff, said he died on Elliott's Creek at the home of his daughter Jennie Doyle Woolwine. John's parents were married 1820 in Bedford County. The first record I can find for his father in Montgomery County is from 5 May 1828. Therefore I have given his place of birth as one of those two counties. From Wes McDaniel web page: From descendant, Gary Brumfield, John's actual record indicates he was a Sergeant not a Captain. Regimental History series for the 63rd Infantry, Co D, which was formed mostly of Montgomery men, has: "DOYLE, JOHN B.: Co. D. Enl. 4/15/62 at Peterstown, aged 35 and was due $50 bounty. Sick at Montgomery Springs Hosp. 3/22/63 and again 3/18/64. His brother James was in the same company.
