Jacob was a constable in the Civil War. He checked for eligible soldiers. Occupation listed on Statement of Marriage---farmer. Jacob had saved a lot of money before the Civil War and kept it in a trunk. His wife, Elizabeth begged him, many times, to take the money and buy cotton with it but Jacob wouldn't do it. And of course he lost all of the money when the South lost the war. When the Union Soldiers came through they took everything the family had, even the clothes off the clothes line in the yard. Jacob and Elizabeth lived at Simpson, Va. He was a very prosperous farmer. WILL OF JACOB WALTERS - WILL BOOK F, page 21 - Floyd Co., Va. The last Will and Testament of Jacob Walters- I Jacob Walters considering the uncertainty of this Mortal life and being of sound Mind and Memory. Blessed be Almighty God. For the same do make and publish this my last Will and testament in manner and form following. (that is to say) First - I desire to be decently and _______ buried on my own land without any funeral pomp and with as little Expense as may be. Second - After the payment of all my just debts and funeral expenses I give to each of my children by my first beloved wife Hannah Walters, Elizabeth Angle, Abigill Board, Mary Kingery's dec'd her two sons, Wm. & Charly Kingery & Christena Boswell the sum of One Dollar each to be paid to each of them in One Year after my disease. Third - I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Elizabeth Walters all my land containing about one hundred Acres, more or less, Known as the homeplace adjoining the land of Jonathan & James R.
