Note:   The following is from Judy Blackwell's book Thomas Hale, Soldier of the Revolution and Some of His Descendants. Letitia Martin was born 19 Oct 1829 in Patrick County, Va. to William Martin and Sarah Harris and died 29 April, 1865 in Floyd County, Va and is buried in the Martin Family Cemetery, in Floyd Co. near Laurel Creek Primitive Baptist church. The 1860 census states that Letitia's brother Moses Martin 24 yrs of age was living with Francis and Letitia, as was Francis' sister Malinda Hale. Francis Hale and Letitia Matrin were married 7 December, 1846, in Patrick County, VA by the Rev. Joshua Adams. In the early part of 1846, Francis Hale and James Martin, Jr., purchased 100 acres of land on Runnett Bag Creek. (See Deed book 10 page 231. Franklin County, VA.) and in 1854 they sold this same land. (See Deed Book 20 page 350) Letitia is mentioned as the wife of Francis Hale, Jr when she relinquished her right of dower in this land. James Martin is thought to be the brother of Letitia. Sometime during the Civil War, Francis Hale, Jr, died whether it was in battle or from some disease we do not know. We do know he was in the War and the Order Books for Franklin County show that Letitia was on the Poor Rolls as his widow and had children. She appeared on the rolls for March, April, May , June and July of 1863. In January of 1864 she was suspended from the rolls. We believe that is the time she and the children came to Floyd County to live with or very near to her parents William and Sarah Harris Martin. Vely Ann Martin, another daughter of William and Sarah H. Martin married John Powell Hale, 21 December 1848 in Patrick County, VA. Vely Ann and Letitia being sisters and their husbands being brothers made the children of these marriages dougle first cousins. John Powell Hale was killed in battle during the Civil War and Velly Ann and her children came to Floyd as well.
