a. Note:   fered a knife wound to his knee early in life which caused him to walk with a sort of hop: ergo Hopping Johnny.
  In 1811 John joined Capt. Fleming Hodges Co, Coffee's Regt at Bralty Springs, AL for the Indian Wars in the War of 1812. However, when he filed for pension in Lampasas Co in 1874, he was denied as he could not prove his service time. Records show he had a substitute from 28 Sept 1814 to 27 March 1815.
  John and Peggy were married 14 Feb 1814 in Madison Co. AL. They were in TN on Christmas 1814 when their 1st child, Nancy, was born. Their 2nd child, Polly, was born in TN 8 Dec 1817 and 3rd, Joseph, on 3 June 1819. Between June 1819 and July 1822, this family moved from TN to AL. In 1830 they were in Marion Co AL In AL, 5 more children were born: Abigail 15 Jul 1822, James 28 Nov 1824, Elizabeth 24 Mar 1827, Jonathan 26 Apr 1829 and Aaron 11 Mar 1833.
  John, Peggy & 4 sons & 3 daughters moved from AL to Brazos Co. TX in 1837.
  He is listed in the 1840 Census in Brazos Co. In the 1850 Census he was in Gonzales Co, age 54, w born in NC. He was living in Lampasas Co by 1865 and moved to Dove Creek, Tom Green Co, in abt 1866.
  By 1874 he was in Lampasas Co. TX where he filed for a pension based on service.
  After the death of Peggy 17 Nov 1848, John married Sarah Katherine McInnis. They had one child, Mary Ann.
  In 1849, he is listed in his father's will.
  John died 13 April 1878, age 82.
Note:   John was born in Rutherford Co. NC 19 October 1795. Johns parents had moved the family to Jackson Co TN by 1803. The family was found in the New Madrid area of MO in 1810, and after the earthquake in Dec 1811, they moved to Madison Co AL. John suf
