After returning to Scotland about 1912 Dugald continued to work as a signal man on the railways first at Kilsyth, then in Fife. The writer believes that he workde first at North Queensferry, then at Rosyth during building of Dockyard living in Couston Street. The family moved back to North Queensferry where he was a signalman on the Forth Bridge railway line until he retired. A self educated man Dugald was one of the first people to do an Open University degree and scrimped to send most of his sons to university. He was an active member of the Railman's Union, indeed possibly one of the founding members in Fife. He was also an active member of the Labour Party served on the local (Inverkeithing) council. In this capacity he sat on the Education Board in the 1950s and 1960's. Dugald loved his garden and had an allotment in North Queensferry when the writer was a child.
