Notes
a. Note:   Birth: Lanark, Hamilton 1880 p.128/383 Mary Ann McCawley (illegitimate) at 31 Whitefield Road, Burnbank, Hamilton. Mother Mary Ann McCawley (domestic servant) registered by grandmother Mary McCawley. NOTE: This register entry has a signiture. It is possible that a friend of the family actually registered this birth and pretended to be the grandmother. Mary Ann snr. did not sign her name on any other register entry (ie marriage, Jean's birth). She also always appears to have given her name as Mary Ann not just Mary. It looks like Mary Ann was brought up by her maternal grandparents as she is with them on all census records. She was probably not William Dixon's child. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Death: Edinburgh, George Square 1950 p.357/1069 Mary Ann Young married to John McLaren Young (coalminer 'retired') at Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh. Usual residence 17 Portobello Road. Aged 70yrs. Mother Mary Ann McCawley (domestic servant) afterwards married to James McMillan (general labourer) deceased. Cause of Death: Cardiac Failure; Arteriosclerosis; Diabetes Mellitus. Registered by son Robert Young, 6 Hay Road, Craigmillar. NOTE: No father's name given. Probably parental information taken from Mary Ann's birth certificate. Son Robert may not have been aware of her mother's marriage to William Dixon or did not think to give it. --------------------------------------------------------------------- My mother remembers visiting Mary Ann as a child. She lived in a basement tenement block in the centre of Edinbugh's Old Town by this time (1940s). She did get a better place off the Council eventually but did not have long to enjoy it before she died. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
