Notes
a. Note:   William is said to have went to the USA in 1860 and worked for the PonyExpress. He fought in the Civil War between 1861 (although he is on the 1861 census in Bedlington, Northumberland for 1861 with parents) and 1865. His initials are scratched on the rocks at the old Pony Express location. Sometime after this he came back to the UK. It is possible that he joined the British army as there is a William Dixon b. Newcastle in Barracks in London in 1871 which could be him. At some point he became a miner as his father was and joined his family either in Bedlington or after they moved to Lanarkshire. In 1881 census he was lodging with his sister Eleanor (Dixon) Muir in Ferniegair, Lanark. William had been back out to US and purchased land in Sweetwater Springs, Wyoming sometime about 1891 intending to move his family there, but died before they could do so. He left Mary Ann with a young family and another baby on the way. The land was 'repossessed' at some point after his death and his signature forged on a bill of sale. Sweetwater Springs Old Folks Centre is now built on the land William once owned. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Birth: Name: Dixon, William Record Type: Births Quarter: December Year: 1845 District: Morpeth County: Co.
