Gregory, 86, widow of William Gregory, a Civil War veteran, died Monday night at 9:10 o'clock at the State Soldier's Home. She was a native of Wabash County, Indiana where she was born October 11, 1842. She became a member of the home om May 10. last. Survivors are three sons and a daughter: William H. Wells, Valonia, Indiana, George D. Wells, Indianapolis, Indiana, Albert Wells. Bloomington. and Miss Florence Wells. Indianapolis, all by a former marriage. The body was taken to Indianapolis for funeral services and burial. Wells a resident of Indianapolis in the County of Marion and State of Indiana aged 44 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth, on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by act of Congress, approved July 14, 1862. That she is the widow of Giles Wells who enlisted in the service of the United States in the State of Ohio on the 7th day of August 1862, as a private in Company H commanded by Edward W. Bradley in the 102nd Regiment of Ohio Vols in the war of 1861;; who, while in the service aforesaid, in the line of his duty the said Giles Wells contracted disease of which he died at Indianapolis in the State of Indiana on the 10th day of December A.D., 1886. She further declares that she was married to the said Giles Wells in the County of Huntington and State of Indiana on the first day of January in the year 1867 that her name before said marriage was Martha A. Swafford that her husband the aforesaid Giles Wells died on the day above mentioned, and that she has remained a widow ever since that period, as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereto annexed. She furhter swears that she has the following named children of her deceased husband and herself, under the age of sixteen years of age, who are now living, the dates of whose births are given below, to-wit: William Henry Wells born on the 8th day of August 1871 Charles A. Wells born on the 28th day of October 1873 Mary E.F. Wells born on the 19th day of November 1875 and that the above named children are the only legitimate children of herself and her husband, now living, who are under sixteen years of age. She further declares that she has not remarried since the death of her said husband, nor has she abandoned the support of any of the children above named, nor permitted any one of the same to be adopted by any other person or persons, as his, her or their child. And further, that her said husband has left no minor child by a former marriage he had been married previously but left no child living by former wife who is dead. She also declares that she has not in any manner been engaged in or aided or abetted the rebellion in the United States. Wells under sixteen years of age. And that she has not abandoned the support of any one of said chidren, nor permitted any one of the same to be adopted by any person or persons as his, her or their child; and that her husband Giles Wells has left not child by a former marriage. They further declare that she has remained a widow ever since her said husband's decease. They further declare that they or either of them, have no interest in this claim, either present or proscpective; and that they are not concerned, directly or indirectly, in its prosecution, and are not near relatives of the claimant. Swofford (first edition) page SA 144.1 12. a. (4) Martha Ann Swafford born in October 1842 in Indiana. She was listed in the 1850 Wabash County, Indiana census at the home of Joseph Vansuator, age 50, born(1800) in Ohio and his wife, Nancy, age 48, born (1802) in Kentucky. (Vansuator may be spelled Vanmetre.) Their relation to Martha is not known but they are possibly her maternal grandparents. Martha was listed in the 1860 Wabash County, Indiana census as a servant at the home of Mary Owen, a widow, age 62, born (1798) in North Carolina. Martha probably married twice but the name of her first husband is not known. She was listed in lthe 1900 Woods County, Oklahoma census and it recorded that she had six children but only four were living at that time. None of their names are known. Martha Ann Swafford secondly married Alfred L. Swiggert in 1890. He was born in April 1850 in Pennsylvania. They were listed in the 1900 Woods County, Oklahoma census at the home of her brother, Daniel D. Swafford. They had no children.
